What is it and What are the Benefits?

In the health and wellness space, nothing is more underrated and impactful than vibrational sound therapy. Not only does it promote relaxation, it also helps to align the mind, body, and spirit. This healing modality has been around for thousands of years, yet it wasn’t until recently when it experienced a huge surge in the West.

With so much fear and uncertainty plaguing the world these past couple of years, people have turned to alternative forms of therapy to regulate the nervous system and calm the mind. This includes modalities like cold immersion, grounding in nature, meditation, wellness retreats, and other personal development tools. In the same way that musical instruments elicit emotions and soothe the body, sound vibration therapy can also greatly impact your well-being.

Looking to learn more about this relaxing and gentle therapy? Here’s everything you need to know about vibrational sound therapy, including its many benefits, most effective tools and devices, and more.

What is vibrational sound therapy?

Vibrational sound therapy is a therapeutic technique that uses sounds and frequencies to enhance a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It involves the use of different tools and instruments (i.e. singing bowls) to unblock chakras and promote a healthy flow of energy. Vibrational sound healing works at the cellular level, activating the body’s natural healing powers and inducing a meditative state.

Research has shown that sound healing can treat a variety of mental and physical issues, including addiction, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, chronic pain, and more. It is also known to increase mental focus, boost immunity, and elevate people’s auras.

Himalayan singing bowls are most often used to perform vibrational sound therapy. However, there are many other tools and methods out there, including tuning forks, shamanic drums, bells, chimes, and gongs. Even humming and singing can have a profound effect on the body.

New vibrational sound technology has also been emerging lately – taking sonic resonance to a whole next level. The best example of this is The Vibe System, a high-tech sound therapy system developed by Dr. Steven Schwartz. I experienced it on a retreat in Costa Rica, and I must say… 15 minutes hooked up to this machine totally transformed my life. It was a fully immersive experience, activating my entire body through body vibrating plates and headphones. If everyone in the world spent 15 minutes every morning using The Vibe Sound Therapy System, the world would be a much better place, that’s for sure!

How does sound vibration therapy work?

To fully understand how vibrational sound therapy works, we must first understand the Law of Vibration. Basically, this states that everything in the universe is in a perpetual state of movement. Not only do sounds have vibrations, but so do humans, tables, chairs, and any other thing for that matter. Every word and thought also has its own vibration, so it’s important to be mindful of how we use them in our daily lives.

Words carry their own vibrations. How we talk about ourselves matters!
Words carry their own vibrations. How we talk about ourselves matters!

The following quote shows how sounds and vibrations work at a basic level:

“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” — Dr. Mitchell Gaynor

From the moment we were in the womb, we have all been affected by sound and vibration. Whether it’s the euphoria we feel when listening to our favorite song or feelings of calm when hearing rainfall, we all are influenced by the power of sound and vibration. They can either nourish us or hurt us. By understanding their powerful effects on the mind and body, we can learn how to apply them for our greatest good.

The science behind the vibrations of sound

Vibrational sound therapy isn’t just a fringe concept practiced by those outside of the mainstream. It’s also accepted by modern Western medicine. All you have to do is look at an MRI machine – which uses sound and vibration to produce detailed images inside the human body – to know that this method works. Watch someone undergo an MRI, and you’ll see different parts of the brain light up when listening to different sounds. It’s no wonder, then, that sounds can elicit emotional states.

Through Quantum Physics, scientists have proved that everything has a vibration. After all, everything you can see and feel is made up of atoms, which are 99.9999% energy and 0.00001% matter. So, instead of focusing on our physical nature (<1%), we ought to focus on the energetic field of information within us (>99%).

Now that we can grasp vibrations at a fundamental level, let’s next look at vibrational sound healing.

What does vibrational healing look like?

During vibrational sound healings, participants are usually seated or lying down on the floor (or yoga mat). Once they are settled in and comfortable (preferably tucked beneath a cozy blanket), the practitioner will play an instrument, such as a singing bowl. From there, the sound waves will physically and energetically interact with the client’s energy field, offering a “massage” for the nervous system. These bowls take on a variety of shapes and sounds, and may be tuned to any of the seven major chakras. The ultimate aim of vibrational healing therapy is to release tension and align the mind, body, and spirit.

In addition to therapeutic bowls, many other devices or instruments can be used in vibrational therapy. I was absolutely blown away by the healing resonance of The Vibe System. But, even vocal chanting – which has been practiced since the dawn of mankind – offers incredible sound therapy benefits. Vibration sound healings can be performed in groups and solitary settings. No matter which vibrational therapies sound good to you, you’re all but guaranteed to you’ll feel amazing afterwards.

What vibrational sound frequency heals the body?

There’s a lot of literature online about the different types of sound healing frequencies. While I haven’t seen any scientific studies evidencing the frequencies associated with healing certain physical or mental conditions, I certainly believe that they exist. However, my hunch is that like everything else in life, there’s a personal element to using sound healing vibrations to heal the body. What works for one person may not work for another. This explains why certain songs and sounds can evoke different emotions in all of us.

As such, I encourage you to do your own independent research on the topic. A good place to start is the book Primal Resonance by Dr. Steven Schwartz, one of the most knowledgable researchers and pioneers on the topic. Through trial and error, you will find sound vibration frequencies that are right for you.

History of sound healing

Sound therapy has been practiced by humans for tens of thousands of years (if not, longer). The earliest known records of sonic healing rituals date back 40,000 years to when Australian Aboriginal peoples used didgeridoos. Vibrational sound therapy was also widely used to treat mental disorders in Ancient Greece. Perhaps the best example of all was the use of sound chambers in the pyramids of Ancient Egypt.

Beyond the above examples, vibration sound therapy has been used in many other contexts throughout history. Music, for example, has often been used to boost morale amongst military troops, while chanting and other ritualistic sound ceremonies have been used to fight off evil spirits. Vibrational healing is truly a timeless tool.

Why is vibrational sound healing popular today?

Though sound vibration therapy has been around a long time, it’s experiencing a resurgence today due to all the social and political issues of our time. From the COVID-19 pandemic to culture wars and geopolitical issues, there’s a lot of uncertainty hanging over people’s heads. This has led to a public mental health crisis affecting millions (if not billions). Rather than taking a pill for every ill, more people are turning to vibrational sound healing and related modalities as an attractive alternative.

In 2022, large segments of the population have rejected modern medicine for ancient remedies that have stood the test of time. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs and supplements, which only work while you’re taking it, vibration healing therapy is a solution that can transform your energy in the long term. Much of the contents found in vitamins, for example, are lost in the digestive tract and need to be taken daily to realize their effects. Vibration, on the other hand, can access the body’s cells and connective tissues directly, bypassing these barriers. Sound healing is also non-invasive, providing a natural way to treat pain and illness.
