A good night’s sleep will make an incredible camping trip even better. It can even be the difference between loving your experience and swearing never to do it again. Last summer my husband and I decided to try tent camping again after primarily using a camper for several years. We packed up our old equipment and took off for a weekend. We packed some slim sleeping pads we used when we were much younger.
It did not take us long to regret not investing in a better sleeping pad. We dealt with a wet tent floor on the first night and were too close to the rocks and roots for comfort the next two nights. We survived this experience but decided to invest in a quality sleeping pad before we ventured out camping with our tent again. The Elegear Double Sleeping Pad for Camping
The Elegear sleeping pad is 4 inches thick and measures 79 X 55 inches. The large size and thickness are designed for two people to sleep comfortably without bottoming out. The weight capacity of this mat is 800 lbs, making it firm and comfortable.
The sleeping pad comes with a built-in foot pump. This makes it easy to inflate without carrying extra equipment. It is made from 40D nylon and TPU materials to make it durable and tear-resistant to ensure it is strong enough to last in rugged environments. For portability, this pad was designed to weigh only 5 lbs and comes with a carrying case.
Testing Out the Elegear Sleeping Pad
Our winter has been pretty mild, so I hoped we would have an early spring to test this pad out on a camping trip. Unfortunately, we received all our winter storms this spring so I needed to settle for testing it out on the deck on a warmish spring day. The sleeping pad was easy to unpack and the enclosed directions provided clear directions to set up the mat.
I rolled out the pad on top of a tarp, plugged the air holes in the pillows, and then used the foot pump to inflate it. It took a little bit of trial and error to figure out how to best use the foot pump but I was able to inflate the pad in about 5 minutes. The hardest part of this was making sure I didn’t block the air hole after compressing the pump.
I inflated it outside because I intended to try it out in the back of my car. I have a mid-size SUV with a hatch that can be nice to sleep in. I found that it was too big and firm to fit. So my next best bet was to try it out on the deck. I grabbed a blanket and took a nap in the sun. I also had my husband test it out with me to see if we could both sleep comfortably on the pad. He said it felt wonderful.
The built-in pillow made the pad very comfortable. I was surprised by how firm the pad was. There was almost no bounce as my husband moved around next to me. The pad is 4 inches thick and stayed warm underneath me in the 50-degree weather. I was a little worried when my dog decided to check out the sleeping pad. I was sure her nails would puncture it but it held up to her walking across the pad.
When it came time to put the mat away I simply unplugged the three air holes and rolled it up. It was very easy to deflate and roll up to store in the bag it came with. Deflating it and rolling it up took less time than airing it up.
My Recommendation
I found the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad to be a quality product and believe it will make a great addition to our camping gear. It is large enough to accommodate both of us and the thickness and firmness will make sleeping on the ground comfortable. If your vehicle is a bit larger it would also function well as a pad for sleeping in your car.
It also appears to be very sturdy and rugged. I dragged it around the house and bumped into a variety of items while trying to fit it in my car and it held up to that and to my dog walking across it.
