20 Unforgettable Stays | Passport Magazine

As the supersonic Concorde airliner touched down from its final flight 20 years ago, Kiwi Collection launched into the travel sphere. Created for people who care where they stay, our expertly curated recommendations began with a simple website and a hardcover coffee table book showcasing 493 of the most exceptional hotels in the Americas. Other books, continents and web iterations followed, to encompass the nearly 2,000 hotels across 130 countries we feature today. Then and now, we seek out special places that stand out and stay with you long after a stay is through. Our enduring aim is to guide travelers to truly memorable experiences, whether that be a seven-course meal you can’t stop talking about or a sunset view that leaves you speechless. Sharing 20 of our own unforgettable stays seems like the right way to kick off our anniversary celebrations. Circling the globe, starting nearest our headquarters in Vancouver, Canada, Kiwi Collection team members and collaborators travel back in time to recall their greatest escapes.

Wickaninnish Inn, Canada

20 unforgettable stays - aerial shot of Wickaninnish Inn and the coastline

“Crashing waves, ancient rainforests, ocean views, heated bathroom floors and bear encounters—these are the highlights of my dreamy 2010 stay at the Wickaninnish Inn. Situated on Canada’s wild Pacific Coast, the beachfront inn is a full immersion into the endless beauty of Clayoquot Sound. The architectural details, such as cedar wood, natural stone and large windows, emphasize the natural surroundings. Savoring fine cuisine at the Pointe Restaurant while waves splashed the windows was an unforgettable experience. My husband and I spent our time exploring beaches, hiking in the Pacific Rim National Park and discovering Tofino’s food scene and Indigenous art. This slice of the West Coast is pure magic.” — Julia Kaplun, Design + Brand Lead

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Canada

“Overlooking Lake Louise’s turquoise waters, the Fairmont Chateau offers an exclusively private escape for those looking to take in the staggering natural beauty. This past summer, I had an amazing experience kayaking the glacial waters and exploring the surrounding hiking trails. Waking up to the most exquisite view and enjoying personalized service in the restaurants was the highlight of my trip. To top it off, I closed out my visit with their famous High Tea, which is definitely worth all the hype it gets.” — Dabira Chhabra, Account Manager, Hotel Programs

Bishop’s Lodge, United States

20 unforgettable stays - Bishop's Lodge viewed from outdoors with a woman standing in front

“There’s something about New Mexico that continues to call me back, and my 2021 stay at Bishop’s Lodge in Santa Fe is yet another reason I’ll be returning to this Southwestern city. Sitting on 317 acres in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Bishop’s Lodge is a sprawling resort steeped in 150 years of history. While the hotel’s new ownership has expanded and modernized beautifully, the original lodge was carefully restored and the chapel dating back to 1860 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Between the peaceful facilities, charming adobe architecture and activities on offer, including the art class I took, it’s easy to find the right mix of excitement and R&R here.” — Michelle Halpern, Passport contributor

Chablé Yucatan, Mexico

20 unforgettable stays - Chablé Yucatan wooden dining table surrounded by black chairs in an outdoor area

“Immersed in the Mayan jungle a few minutes from Mérida, former sisal-producing hacienda Chablé Yucatan offers a window to the past and present. During my stay in 2018, I was reminded of the history this place has witnessed throughout the years. Featuring the works of local artisans and surrounded by nature, my villa with a private pool was breathtakingly secluded and modern. The Mayan cultural heritage and mystical traditions are present throughout the experience, as Chablé features its own cenote, authentic Yucatan gastronomy and one of the largest collections of tequilas.” — Karina Fuentes, Account Manager, Hotel Programs

Paradero Todos Santos, Mexico

20 unforgettable stays - Paradero Todos Santos outdoor infinity pool lined with loungers

“Where the dirt road ends, there rests Paradero Todos Santos, about an hour north of Cabo. My two nights here in October 2023 mark one of the most memorable stays to date in my year of exploring Mexico. The sunbaked, architectural-forward hotel blends seamlessly into Baja California’s landscape. My feeling throughout the stay was an intriguing sense of place. From chilaquiles drenched in fire-roasted chile verde to grounding moments during a sound bath, everything that Baja is intertwines. What an incredible opportunity to experience this vast terrain in the hands of Paradero.” — Jessica Wright, Passport contributor

Rancho Santana, Nicaragua

20 unforgettable stays - Rancho Santana front view

“Like most magical and remote corners of the world, there is no splashy marketing slogan beckoning tourists to experience the joys of Nicaragua. Instead, there is a whisper campaign amongst those in the know, the slow travelers who appreciate the authenticity of such a place. Where verdant jungle and tropical forests border sparkly emerald coasts lives Rancho Santana. Nestled at the end of a dirt road and surrounded by dusky-pink hued beaches, the resort, which I visited in 2022, boasts surf breaks galore, horse stables, a vegetable garden servicing the entire property and a breezy yoga pavilion and spa with views out to sea. Days can be packed with activities and exploration but I found a nap in the shade is equally impossible to resist.” — Amanda Blakley, Passport contributor

Casa San Agustin, Columbia

20 unforgettable stays - Casa San Agustin outdoor terrace with tables, plants and loungers

“Passing through the historic concrete walls of Cartagena in 2017, I felt immediately transported to the past. A sense of calm and relaxation set in after stepping foot into Casa San Agustin, a dramatic contrast from the frenetic fortified city streets on its doorstep. The courtyard pool, featuring an ancient Spanish aqueduct, offered refuge from the hot Colombian sun. Lavish cocktails and desserts at Alma, one of Cartegena’s finest restaurants, helped me recount the days’ activities before retreating to my room of handcrafted furniture and exposed timber framing. The intimate colonial-style hotel made a fantastic homebase for exploring this colorful coastal city.” — Brent Arentsen, Director, Distribution

explora Patagonia, Chile

20 unforgettable stays - A wooden walkway leading towards explora Patagonia, beside a lake, with mountains behind
20 unforgettable stays - a line of people riding on horseback through a valley, with mountains behind

“In a region of grand glaciers, towering mountains and turquoise lakes, explora Patagonia was the perfect platform for experiencing such an incredible part of the world. Perched by Lake Pehoé, the quiet, architectural property is embedded in Chile’s jaw-dropping Torres del Paine National Park. There in 2015, I would plot the next day’s adventures—be it a full-day hike up to the iconic three towers or an afternoon horseback ride across the pampa with a gaucho—whilst sipping on a refreshing Pisco Sour. They take care of all of the details so guests can simply soak up the natural wonder.” — Joy Pecknold, Passport Editor

explora Rapa Nui, Chile

20 unforgettable stays - a row of Easter Island Moai

“Remote and isolated Rapa Nui is one of the most distinctive, unusual places my wife and I have visited. Every day we were there in 2016, we embarked on excursions with explora Rapa Nui guides, including visiting the famed moai and hiking around the island. We climbed into underground caverns where families had slept at night centuries ago, ate raw sea urchin on the beach and watched the waves crash from a cliffside cave. After our outings, we returned to the lodge to feast on local cuisine with Chilean wine before falling into bed with ocean views in sight.” — Dana Hangai, Vice President, Products and Partnerships

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, Vietnam

20 unforgettable stays - a row of restaurant tables outside a white building, next to a road

“Located in the heart of the city, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is a sublime blend of historic charm and contemporary luxury. Visiting here back in 2015, I felt privileged to stay at such a renowned, historic hotel, where every corner felt like a journey through time. The sheer joy of cooling off in their stunning pool on the balmiest days made me feel like a movie star. While the food overall was outstanding, the breakfast brunch remains a personal favorite. I still find myself dreaming about their chocolate cake, which one of the chefs insisted I try. The combination of personal touches, coupled with impeccable service, luxurious accommodations and a central location, makes for an extraordinary and unforgettable retreat.” — Nancy Smith, Luxury Hotel Specialist

Soneva Kiri, Thailand

20 unforgettable stays - Soneva Kiri and surrounding ocean aerial view

“Nestled in a tranquil bay on one of Thailand’s largest but least developed islands, Soneva Kiri is the definition of jaw-dropping. The dramatic arrival by private Cessna plane and warm welcome from my Barefoot Guardian set the scene for an unforgettable 2022 stay. I’ll never forget snorkeling with cuttlefish, swimming below the Khlong Chao Waterfall and bouncing around the expansive property on my own electric buggy. The culinary concepts—deeply traditional Thai, a Japanese-Peruvian 10-course tasting menu, a charcuterie room in a circular glass vault—were the cherry on top.” — Nicole Havers, Marketing Content Manager

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

20 unforgettable stays - Mandarin Oriental Singapore outdoor pool with palm trees and loungers

“Back in 2006, Kiwi Collection was printing our coffee table book, Overnight Sensations, in Singapore for the first time. Coincidentally, it was also my first time in Singapore and I came to understand why it’s called The Garden City. I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, Singapore, which is ideally located for exploring the downtown core by foot. Each day, we would travel to the north of the island, almost at the border crossing to Malaysia, to be at the printer for each press check. The Mandarin Oriental provided the perfect oasis after a hectic day of travel across the island.” — Brian Mumby, Co-Founder and President

Armani Hotel Dubai, United Arab Emirates

20 unforgettable stays - Dubai skyline viewed from a rooftop, in the evening

“A lot of hotels talk about service, but Armani Hotel Dubai takes it to the next level. Walking into its iconic Dubai building in 2016, my bags were quickly whisked away. Each morning, by different people, I was greeted in the restaurant by name and, with my order from the previous day noted, I’d be asked if I would like to have that again. Coffee is served on silver trays with chocolates and dinner comes with a show of The Dubai Fountain spouting off. Rooms are unmistakably Armani, as seen in the high level of detail and intentionality of every design element. Fragranced in a scent signature to the hotel and full-size, the bathroom amenity kit came home with me.” Cynthia Verboon, Vice President, Hotel Programs

FORESTIS, Italy

20 unforgettable stays - Wooden seating structure looking out over forest and mountains with sun shining through
20 unforgettable stays - Forestis pool with floor-to-ceiling windows

“The beauty of FORESTIS lies in its simplicity. The rooms and shared spaces are minimalist, accented only with natural wood elements and Dolomite stone, letting the astonishing mountain range take centerstage. There in Ocotober 2023, my friend and I spent our days walking through the forest, indulging in the expansive spa, partaking in Wyda yoga sessions, sampling the exquisite Forest Cuisine menu and gazing out at uninterrupted views of the majestic peaks. Every aspect of the hotel seeks to be in harmony with its natural surroundings, offering the perfect setting for total relaxation.” — Olivia Betts, Digital Marketing Coordinator

Hotel Savoy, Italy

20 unforgettable stays - Hotel Savoy room with couch, coffee table and seats

“The standout features of my 2017 stay at Florence’s Hotel Savoy was undoubtedly the unbeatable location and exceptional service. The staff went above and beyond in creating a welcoming atmosphere, from knowing my name to following up on my daily explorations around the city. Rather than conforming to a set mold, each team member let their unique personality shine, making interactions more warm, personal and enjoyable. The stylish design and well-appointed rooms then provided the icing on top.” — Michelle O’Neil, Luxury Hotel Specialist

“My family trip to Hôtel Barrière Le Fouquet’s Paris in 2022 was a fairytale from start to finish. The personalized touches made for an unforgettable adventure. Balloons and a special hotel package for my daughter showcased the property’s attention to detail and made her feel like a princess. For my coffee-loving mom, the customized cappuccinos were a highlight—she still raves about them as the best she’s ever had. The staff’s commitment to making us feel special at every turn, combined with the central location, luxurious spa and exceptional dining, created a perfect Parisian retreat that exceeded all expectations.” — Diana Danicico, Luxury Hotel Specialist

Finca Cortesin, Spain

20 unforgettable stays - Finca Cortesin outdoor pool with loungers and umbrellas

“Drawn to this corner of Spain’s stunning Costa del Sol for a close friend’s wedding in 2015, Finca Cortesin did not disappoint. When my family and I arrived, we were greeted by the hotel manager and upgraded to the Cortesin Suite, a palatial pad with an ensuite bedroom at each end, a butler’s kitchen and luxurious lounge in the middle. Every morning and evening, we reveled in the spectacular views of the pool and verdant resort our sumptuous suite afforded us.” — Anna Cort, Global Director, Hotel Programs

Six Senses Douro Valley, Portugal

20 unforgettable stays - Six Senses Douro Valley viewed from afar, surrounded by green fields and vineyards
20 unforgettable stays - Six Senses Douro Valley kitchen filled with produce

“A breathtaking resort in one of Portugal’s noted wine regions, Six Senses Douro Valley is set among vineyards and along the Douro River. During my 2017 stay, a highlight was the spa, where they use locally sourced ingredients in all treatments, in line with their commitment to sustainability. The hotel also offers a wide range of wellness programs. Given they are located in a famed culinary destination, it is no surprise that their own offerings focused on regional flavors were some of the best I’d experienced in all of Portugal. The resort’s concierge is extremely knowledgeable and arranged some of the most unique, small vineyard wine tastings, including stomping our own grapes for Port wine. I would say this resort is the perfect retreat for foodies, nature lovers, wine enthusiasts or all the above.” — Carla Drake, Vice President, Concierge

The Oberoi, Marrakech, Morocco

20 unforgettable stays - Oberoi Marrakech private outdoor terrace with pool, garden and loungers

“For our 10th wedding anniversary in June 2023, my husband booked us a surprise stay at The Oberoi, Marrakech. The hotel’s stunning design is an oasis of calm, with our room’s private pool offering an especially tranquil retreat. On arrival, we were delighted to find cakes and Champagne waiting for us. What resonated most with me was the exceptional, attentive-yet-unassuming service. We felt beyond spoiled throughout our stay. The food was incredible, particularly the breakfast, as was the setting—the magnificent architecture seamlessly blends Moroccan heritage with luxury.” — Federica Lorijn-Antonioli, Global Director, Hotel Programs

Singita Lebombo Lodge, South Africa

20 unforgettable stays - Singita Lebombo Lodge private wooden deck with bed and canopy, overlooking a river
20 unforgettable stays -leopard face at close range

“Suspended aloft the N’wanetsi River in Kruger National Park, Singita Lebombo Lodge is inspired by eagles’ nests built into the cliff face—floating between river and sky. From the moment my husband and I arrived in 2012, it felt like we were also in a state of levitation. It didn’t take long to spot the “Big Five,” but it was the moments of connection that really resonated, such as an injured yet stoic male lion hauntingly calling to his sister (who eventually emerged) and looking into the eyes of a leopard whose purr was audible. Back at the lodge, immersive spaces and intuitive attention to detail maintained our dream-like experience. Singita is the Shangaan word for “place of miracles,” and this stay was nothing short of extraordinary.” — Brooke Van Hatten, Vice President, Marketing
