Does it Snow in Paris? If you are planning a trip to Paris this winter, you might ask yourself this question. Because even though Paris is often synonymous with springtime romance and warm summer days, a stroll through the snow kissed city of love? Priceless!

Truth be told, Paris is not renowned for heavy snowfall and more likely than not, it won’t be snowing during your stay. But if you are lucky, you can be sure that the occasional winter blanket of snow transforms the City of Light into a mesmerizing winter wonderland.

Does it snow in Paris?

In this article, we explore the frequency and timing of snowfall in Paris. I will shed light on when you might witness this enchanting phenomenon during your visit.

And as I have been living in Paris for more than 17 years now, I will tell you as well, how Paris REALLY is when it’s snows.

How often does it snow in Paris?

Snowfall in Paris is indeed an infrequent event, more of an exception to a rule. Significantly heavy snowfall isn’t even an annual affair. Instead, snow in Paris is often limited to a few fleeting flakes that scarcely linger on the ground before melting away.

Paris is not a city to be known as a winter wonderland. And since the years, it is getting less and less likely that we’re getting any snow in Paris at all. Overall, Paris gets simply warmer. The combination of global warming and the fact that Paris is an urban heat island are playing not in favor of snow in Paris.

In 1931 -1960, the average winter temperature in Paris was 4,0 °C with an average snow fall of 13 days. 40 years later, the average temperature rose to 5.7 °C and only 7.1 days see some snow. And this means any snow, even 3 flakes. (source)

Parisians and visitors alike eagerly await this meteorological phenomenon, which blankets the iconic landmarks and cobblestone streets in a picturesque layer of white. To understand the frequency of snow in Paris, let’s delve into the historical patterns and moments of winter enchantment.

When does it Snow in Paris?

To understand the phenomenon of snow in Paris, we must delve into the specific months when this city experiences its winter wonder.

Does it snow in Paris in November?

November in Paris is often a transitional period from autumn to winter. While the temperature begins to drop, snowfall is quite uncommon during this month. Parisians and tourists typically do not witness a white November, as the city usually experiences only light flurries, if any.

In November, your chances of sitting outside in a street café sipping a café are higher than seeing some snow. But this being said, I clearly remember November 2016. Paris got hit by surprise by a mid-autumn snow front. A phenomenon that did not happen in the Paris region since 1980.

Does it snow in Paris in December?

December, the month of festive lights and holiday cheer, holds the promise of snowfall in many parts of the world.

In Paris, the chances of witnessing snow increase as the month progresses. Although still very unlikely, December occasionally sees a dusting of snow. It’s often not enough for creating a picture-perfect backdrop for the Parisian Christmas markets and celebrations.

Because Decembers in Paris are mostly humid and wet. With the highest rain chances and temperatures looming around 6 °C. But there are exceptions and even though it’s rare, there is still a slight chance of experiencing a white Christmas in Paris.

Does it snow in Paris in January?

January brings the heart of winter to Paris. This month is when the city has the highest likelihood of experiencing snowfall. The temperatures drop significantly, and while it may not snow every day, Paris typically sees a few snowy days during January.

January in Paris comes with the highest chances of snow. But don’t be disappointed if the snow is staying or if just a few flakes. Snow that turns iconic landmarks into a breathtaking winter landscape is rare in Paris.

Does it snow in Paris in February?

As winter continues its grip on Paris, February keeps the possibility of snow alive. Although not as frequent as January, snowfall is still a possibility, especially in the early part of the month.

The last time we saw snow in Paris in February was in 2021. It was flipping cold and the 2 cm shy layer of snow stayed surprisingly long in the beautiful Parisian Parks. I have lovely memories of walking the Jardin Tuileries during this time.

And as the snow stayed for a few days, we were even granted blue skies for this winter scene.

Does it snow in Paris in March?

March marks the gradual transition from winter to spring in Paris. While snowfall becomes increasingly rare, it is not entirely impossible. Early March may occasionally surprise Parisians with a few flurries, but as the month progresses, the chances of snow diminish.

But not all hope is lost as the month progresses. Because snow in Paris as late as April is less rare than you might think. I remember several occasions when this happened. We even celebrated Easter under the snow in 2021!

How is Paris in the Snow?

The majestic Parisian landmarks, the stunning parks and the cute cobbled stone neighborhoods are a real beauty when covered by a layer of snow. Marvelous to look at and a sight you won’t ever forget.

But there is also an inconvenient side about snow in Paris. The snow melts easily away. Leaving a slushy and slidy cover over every street. It is dangerous to walk on because you slip so easily. But the slush is freezing cold, leaving your feet cold and numb, and if you are unlucky, even wet.

Snow in Paris plunges Paris into chaos: public transport is delayed, streets aren’t cleared and sometimes highways are closed. It becomes rather troublesome when you have to carry on with your daily responsibilities.

Will there be Snow at Disneyland Paris?

Disneyland Paris, the magical world of Mickey and Minnie, holds a special charm during winter. However the big question on many visitors’ minds is whether they can experience a snowy Disney fairy tale.

Truth be told, your chances of snow in Disneyland Paris are not very much higher than in Paris. Disneyland lies just a few kilometers outside of Paris. But as you are leaving the urban heat island behind, snow has the tendency to stay longer. And to be more!

I worked outside of Paris for a many years and while we were completely snowed in at work, Paris merely saw a few flakes.

However, but with or without snow, the crew at Disney make sure that you get your fair share of winter wonderland. Thanks to fake snow and lots and lots of amazing decorations.

Where to spend a day in Paris in the snow?

When the rare but delightful occasion of snowfall graces Paris, the city takes on an ethereal quality that beckons exploration. Here are five enchanting locations to make the most of your snowy day in Paris:

#1 Montmartre

Montmartre, with its iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica perched atop a hill, becomes even more enchanting when blanketed in snow. Take a leisurely stroll through its cobblestone streets, enjoy the panoramic views of the city, and experience the artistic spirit that lingers in this historic neighborhood.

On very snowy days, it might even happen that you get to witness some brave Parisians who race down the hills of Montmartre skiing.

#2 Les Tuileries

Les Tuileries Garden, located between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde, is a tranquil oasis in the heart of Paris. In winter, when the fountains are frozen still, and the trees are adorned with a delicate layer of snow, it’s the perfect place for a peaceful walk and some quiet contemplation.

#3 Versailles Castles

A short train ride from Paris brings you to the Palace of Versailles and its magnificent gardens. When snow falls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site becomes even more stunning. The vast gardens and the grandeur of the palace offer a unique winter wonderland experience.

A word of warning: Paris knows only two kinds of snow: merely flakes or completely mayhem. It often happens that traffic comes to a halt when train tracks and streets are frozen. Only visit Versailles when it stopped snowing and the region got used to the situation.

#4 Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg, the historic Luxembourg Gardens, is a picturesque spot for a snowy day in Paris. Stroll along the tree-lined paths, admire the Medici Fountain, and perhaps engage in a friendly game of snowball fights with locals.

#5 By the Seine

The banks of the River Seine take on a poetic quality when dusted with snow. Consider taking a romantic walk along the Seine’s quays. Here you can enjoy the serene beauty of Paris’ iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Louvre Museum in their winter attire.

In Paris, snowfall is a rare but enchanting phenomenon that transforms the city into a magical winter wonderland. It may not occur as frequently as in some other regions. But when the first snowflakes descend upon the city, they add a layer of charm and elegance that is truly unforgettable.
