Solo Bucket List: Fun Things to Do Alone At Home & Beyond

Solo Bucket List: Fun Things to Do Alone At Home & Beyond (to Entertain Yourself)

1. Adopt A Pet

Whether you choose to adopt a dog, cat, or another furry (or non-furry) companion, giving pets a second chance at life can bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love into your life. Plus, having a pet as your partner can add more fun and adventure to your life as you explore the world together, go for walks, and create lifelong memories.

You can visit local animal shelters, research reputable rescue organizations, or browse online adoption platforms (like Petfinder and ASPCA) to find the perfect pet that resonates with you.

2. Bake A Some Sweet Treats

If you have a sweet tooth or enjoy spending time in the kitchen, baking some delicious treats during your ‘me’ time can be a delightful experience. You can choose your favorite dessert or try out a new recipe, gather the ingredients, and get your apron on. What’s more, you can get creative with decorations, experiment with flavors, and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing your sweet creations come to life.

At the end of it all, you’ll also get to savor the fruits of your labor and enjoy the scrumptious results, which can be incredibly rewarding and enjoyable, especially when you can share your homemade treats with loved ones or enjoy them all by yourself!

3. Check Out A Nearby Town

Exploring a nearby town alone can provide a sense of freedom, spontaneity, and curiosity as you embark on a solo adventure full of surprises and new discoveries. It’s an opportunity to expand your horizons, step out of your comfort zone, and create cherished memories as you navigate a new place all by yourself.

You can choose a town or a city nearby that you’ve always been curious about and create a fun bucket list to complete while you’re there. Then hop in your car or use public transportation, and embark on a solo road trip.

Once there, you can wander through the streets, visit local landmarks, museums, or parks, and immerse yourself in the local culture. You can also try out the local cuisine, interact with the locals, and discover hidden gems that may not be on the typical tourist path.

4. Complete A Random Act Of Kindness

Doing something kind to others can be a fulfilling and heartwarming experience. Not only does it allow you to bring joy and make a difference to others, but it can also uplift your own spirit and remind you of the power of what even a little bit of kindness can do.

Your random act of kindness can be paying for someone’s coffee, holding the door, offering a genuine compliment, or helping someone in need. Whatever you choose to do, it’s a simple yet powerful way to connect with others, create a positive ripple effect, and make the world a better place, one random act of kindness at a time.

5. Learn Something New

Is there something interesting that you want to learn and explore, like say, picking up a new instrument, learning origami, or how to write a haiku?  With so many things around us to stay curious about, there’s always the opportunity to learn something new at every corner.

Take the time to challenge yourself and acquire new knowledge, either through online classes, mentors, or tutorial videos (and many more.) Trust me, it can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, not to mention the boost in self-confidence you’ll get from learning (and mastering!) that one thing.

6. Create A Bucket List!

Every bucket list is born out of one’s own dreams, goals, and aspirations. So if you haven’t made one yet, then let this be the sign for you to make one right now. Creating a bucket list can be an exciting and introspective solo activity. Whether it’s a simple list or an elaborate vision board, this allows you to brainstorm, dream big, and visualize the experiences you want to have.

Additionally, a bucket list serves as a source of motivation and inspiration, propelling you to take action and make your dreams a reality.

7. Create a New Budget Plan

Whether it be for managing your financial situation and lifestyle or how to save money for your bucket list goals, learning how to create your own budget plan is one of the best ways you can do to assess and take control of your finances.

By listing down your spending habits, savings goals, and financial priorities, it can help you better understand where you are financially and what to work from there.

Creating a budget plan can also provide you with a sense of financial peace and security, as you’ll have a clear roadmap for managing your money effectively.

8. Get Creative

No matter our exposure to the arts, everyone can be creative. Whether you’re drawn to arts and crafts projects like pottery, scrapbooking, or drawing, there’s an art form out there for you. And don’t worry if your art piece doesn’t turn out how you envisioned it to be. The key is to start small and build your skills and confidence over time.

For example, if you’re interested in painting but feel intimidated by a blank canvas, try starting with something easier, like doing a paint-by-numbers kit, where you’ll just have to follow the numbers and paint them with the corresponding color. Or you can just let loose and express yourself in your painting without worrying what others might think about it.

9. Discover A New Genre of Music

Is there a particular music genre you’re interested in, or just looking for something new to listen to? Then hit that play button and check it out! Discovering a new music genre can help you broaden your perspectives and even inspire you creatively, such as diving into the world of jazz, immersing yourself in classical music, or finding something unique in the indie scene. So why not add it to your solo bucket list and see where your musical journey takes you?

10. Do Some Yoga/Meditate

Practicing yoga or meditation can be a simple yet powerful way to enhance your well-being and cultivate mindfulness. It can also offer a unique and reflective experience that allows you to deepen your practice and gain a greater sense of self-awareness and inner peace.

You can join an online yoga or meditation class or even use apps like Simply Yoga and Headspace which you can follow along during your free time at home (or any other private space.)

11. Experiment In The Kitchen

Bring out your inner chef and let your creativity run wild by trying out something new in the kitchen. You get to indulge in your culinary creation. So don your chef hat and apron and get cooking!

12. Explore Your Hometown Like A Tourist

Have you ever considered exploring your hometown like a tourist? It might sound a bit unconventional, but taking the time to rediscover the hidden gems and local treasures of the place you call home can be a surprisingly fun and rewarding experience.

From visiting popular tourist attractions to trying out new cafes and restaurants, there’s always something new to discover. And by doing it alone, you can enjoy your hometown on your own terms and indulge in your own curiosities.

13. Finish a Jigsaw Puzzle

No matter what age you are, there’s nothing more satisfying than the feeling of putting the last piece on a jigsaw puzzle after putting hours upon hours of patience and focus into it.

What I love about jigsaw puzzles is that you can work on them anytime you want to sit back, relax, and take your mind off things.

14. Do Some Star Gazing

Star gazing is one of the most magical things to do by yourself that can help you connect with the beauty of the universe. It’s an opportunity to step outside and appreciate the vastness of the night sky, away from the distractions of daily life. With a clear sky, you can witness the stars, planets, and constellations in their full glory, marveling at their magnificence and contemplating the mysteries of the universe.

It can also be a relaxing and meditative experience, as you bask in the tranquility and serenity of the night. Whether you use a telescope, binoculars, or simply rely on your naked eye, star gazing can be a profound and unforgettable experience, offering a sense of perspective and wonder that’s hard to find elsewhere. So grab a blanket, find a quiet spot, and let the stars in the sky be your companions for the night.

P.S. For something unique, you can even name a star after someone!

15. Give Yourself A Makeover

Giving yourself a makeover is like hitting the refresh button on your personal style. It’s a chance to level up your look, boost your confidence, and unleash your inner fashionista.

Whether you want to rock a bold new haircut, play around with funky makeup, or slay in a killer outfit, it’s a chance to experiment with your style, try new trends, and discover a whole new you.

Plus, with a newfound sense of swagger and sass, you’ll be turning heads left and right, and leaving everyone wondering how you managed to look so dang fabulous.

16. Go Camping

When you’re camping solo, you’re the captain of your own adventure, free to do just the camping activities that you love: explore, hike, fish, or nap in your hammock until your heart’s content. With no one else around to bug you (aside from, well, actual bugs), you can finally relax, unwind, and soak in the serenity of the great outdoors.

And let’s be real, nothing beats watching the stars twinkle above you as you roast marshmallows over an open fire. With every breath of fresh air, you’ll feel your worries melt away, and with every step, you’ll find the adventurer in you ready to take on the world. So ditch the daily grind for now and reconnect with Mother Nature, one s’more at a time!

17. Take A Bike Ride

One of the best ways to get some time outside is by going on a bike ride. You can go on a leisurely ride and relax and enjoy the sights at a scenic park, or if you prefer something more challenging, cycle your way through hills and valleys.

It also doubles as a way to work up a sweat and get your heart pumping, which is always a welcome addition to keeping your physical health in check.

18. Go Paddleboarding

Compared to other water sports like surfing, the learning curve for paddleboarding is easy enough for beginners to pick up. What’s also great about it is you can paddleboard even in flat or calm water, which is also great when getting started before venturing into the sea.

19. Go To The Movies

With streaming services like Netflix and Hulu readily available with a push of a button, watching movies has never been easier. However, that doesn’t mean watching one on the big screen is out of the window. Whether you’re a cinephile or a casual moviegoer, going to the movies alone is one experience you should try at least once.

Although it may seem awkward at first, the magic of cinema will more than make up for it, be it from the smell of popcorn or how it can transport you into a different world as the sea of people around you fade into the background.

20. Take a Stroll in the Park

A leisurely stroll in the park is one of life’s simple pleasures that you can enjoy by yourself. You can breathe in the fresh air, soak up the sunshine, and admire the natural beauty around you, all while getting some exercise and clearing your mind.

Take your time exploring the park’s hidden paths and corners, or find a peaceful spot to sit and reflect. You might even come across some interesting wildlife or meet a friendly dog and their owner.

Whether you’re in the mood for some quiet contemplation or just need to stretch your legs, a solo stroll in the park is a great way to recharge your batteries and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors.

21. Spend the Morning  in a Coffee Shop

For some people, nothing gets the day going more than a cup of their favorite Joe in hand. A morning in a coffee shop is a chance to slow down, savor the moment, and get that much-needed caffeine boost. You can indulge in a sweet treat or a hearty breakfast sandwich and take advantage of the free Wi-Fi to get some work done or plan your next solo adventure.

22. Treat Yourself to a Fancy Dinner

Why wait for a special occasion or a dining companion to enjoy a fancy meal? Celebrate your own company and treat yourself to a luxurious dining experience, complete with candlelight, white tablecloths, and a glass of fine wine. Indulge in the chef’s specialty dishes, savor every bite, and enjoy the attentive service. You can dress up or dress down, depending on your mood, and soak up the ambiance of the restaurant.

23. Have An Epic Spa Day

When was the last time you’ve pampered yourself? Go ahead and spend a day of relaxation, rejuvenation, and self-care at a spa of your choice. Book a massage, facial, or body treatment, and let the therapists work their magic on you. Depending on their amenities, you can also take advantage of the sauna, steam room, or hot tub, and let your worries and stress melt away.

24. Declutter Your Closet

A decluttering session for your closet is a chance to simplify your life and create space for what matters. You can take everything out, try on each item, and decide what to keep, donate, or toss. You might even discover hidden gems that you forgot about, or realize that you’ve been holding onto things you no longer need. By setting aside just a few hours of your day decluttering your closet, you’ll feel lighter, more organized, and more in control.

25. Learn a New Dance Move

Are you tired of feeling self-conscious on the dance floor? Want to learn a few new moves to impress your friends? You can never go wrong with a new dance move or two in your pocket for the next time you need to bust a move.

With online tutorials and virtual classes at your fingertips, you can learn different dance moves from the comfort of your own home, such as salsa, hip hop, or a country line dance. So step out of your comfort zone and let your feet do the talking – you never know, you might just stumble upon your new signature move!

26. Practice a New Language

In a world that is more connected than ever, learning a new language is a great skill to add to your toolbox. Aside from its mental benefits (like improved memory and brain functions), you’ll also be able to broaden your horizons and understand their culture even more.

You can check out apps like Duolingo or Busuu, or enroll in a language course to get you started on your language learning journey.

27. Learn A New Skill

Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, upgrading your skill set, or just love learning new things, mastering a new skill is a great way to challenge yourself and grow. It can help you be more adaptable in our fast-changing world and also open a whole door of opportunities. You can enroll in a course online (or a class) or go the self-learning route with the help of tutorials and books.

28. Write a Letter in Calligraphy

Ever seen those fancy and satisfying calligraphy videos? Now’s your chance to put your penmanship to the test and learn how to write in one! There are 3-4 main categories for you to choose from, such as Western, Eastern Asian, South Asian, and Arabic, all of which also branch to other types and styles.

There are plenty of resources online to help you: You can start with faux calligraphy that uses a standard ballpoint pen or buy a simple lettering set that includes a brush pen! Once you get the hang of it, you can start writing a letter with your newfound skill.

29. Learn How to Juggle

Looking for some fun, challenging things to do at home? One thing you can try out is juggling. While learning how to juggle is hard (with three balls being the entry point,) with the right technique and practice, it can be a rewarding and entertaining experience once you nail things down (or rather, up).

30. Make Some Fresh Pasta

While it may be tempting to buy pre-made/dry pasta from the store, there is something truly special about making your own pasta from scratch. Sure, the ones from the store can be cheaper and save you time. However, homemade pasta is fresher and more flavorful (which I and many others can attest to.) Plus, you get to control the amount and quality of your ingredients.

31. Learn To Play a Musical Instrument

If you love music, chances are you also know how to play a musical instrument or are interested in learning one. From acoustic guitars to drums to violins and many others, there’s a slew of instruments you can choose to go and learn with (for me, I went with learning a song on the harmonica!) As an added bonus, the musical theories you’ll learn along the way (such as scales) are easily adaptable to other instruments.

32. Listen To Your Favorite Song on Repeat

This is probably one of the easiest things you can do solo. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is something you’ve already done. But if you haven’t found that one song yet (or looking for a new favorite song to listen to,) don’t worry! With different genres, artists, and music to immerse yourself into, you will surely find one that you’ll never tire of hearing on repeat.

33. Make A Time Capsule and Bury It

For something a bit more unique for your bucket list, this one’s for you! If this is your first time hearing it, a time capsule is a container filled with items you intend to preserve and open at a later date.

You can think of it as a treasure box filled with all sorts of goodies and memorabilia of a time that passed. The capsule is then sealed away somewhere safe until its opening date (up to 50+ years, depending on your container (the anti-corrsion capsule by Baiyun is a good one!) It can be buried underground or placed in a special place.

34. Create a Cocktail

Do you love drinking cocktails? Then perhaps you should try your hand at mixing your own cocktail concoction. You can use classic cocktail recipes as a starting point or unleash your inner mixologist and create something entirely new (though it may take a bit of trial and error.)

35. Organize Your Photos

Fancy a trip down memory lane? Whether you have a box full of old prints or a hard drive full of digital files, organizing your photos lets you sort, categorize, and label each one for easy access and enjoyment in the future. Aside from that, it also allows you to relive precious moments and discover forgotten gems.

For physical copies, putting them on a photo album or a scrapbook is a fantastic way to store them, not to mention you can stylize and add your own touch to it. For digital ones, you can upload or save the pictures on your computer, then group them using folders.

36. Have A Solo Picnic in the Park

Picnics are often associated with family gatherings or romantic dates. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t go in one alone. Sure, it may seem weird at first, but going on a solo picnic is a unique way to take a break from it all and get some ‘me’ time. You can pack a small basket with your favorite snacks, a cozy blanket, or even a good book. It also helps if you can find a peaceful spot in the park to relax and unwind.

37. Plan Your Next Trip

Some say that the best plan is having no plan at all. While traveling to someplace new and leaving your journey up to chance might seem like a good idea, it never hurts to have a solid plan ahead of time just in case things don’t turn out the way you expect them to be.

Researching and planning for your next trip not only helps you make the perfect travel itinerary, it can also help you stay motivated by having something to look forward to.

38. Play A Video Game

There’s no doubt that playing video games is one activity you can do even if you’re on your own, no matter what type of game you might be.

If you already have your own gaming device like a PS console, Nintendo Switch, or a gaming PC, great! You can check out titles you’ve never played or might have accidentally missed. Of course, even if you only have your mobile phone, there are still tons of great video games to choose from on the App Store or Google Play (Candy Crush is my favorite!).

39. Prep Your Meals For The Week

With how busy our lives can get, you might find it hard to squeeze in some time to prepare meals on a daily basis. One way you can get around this is by prepping your meals for the week, like during your day off.

You can make a list of your favorite recipes (preferably ones with a long shelf life) and shop for the ingredients you need. Then, cook and portion your meals in advance. Not only will you take the stress away from preparing meals on the go, but you’ll also have more time to do other stuff.

40. Make a Picture Collage Wall

Whether you’re looking to refresh your room, want to create a focal point, or just love DIY projects, making a picture collage wall is a fun and crafty way to add some personality to your space.

It can also allow you to express your artistic style, even if you’re on a budget. You can gather your favorite prints, photos, postcards, or magazine cutouts and arrange them in a creative and inspiring way.

For help, MPIX has easy collage wall kits and Wayfair has plenty of collage wall frames to choose from.

41. Read A Book

What better way to spend some alone time than with a good book at hand? Be it a classic novel, a self-help book, or a thrilling mystery (or maybe even my book: Bucket List Adventures?), diving into a good read can transport you to a different world and provide some much-needed relaxation and entertainment wherever and whenever you might be.

42. Rearrange Your Furniture

Giving your home a breath of fresh air doesn’t have to cost you anything. Sometimes, all you need is a good arrangement of your furniture to breathe new life into your living space and give yourself a change of scenery without leaving the house. Of course, you can always add new furniture or throw away/repurpose old ones should you need to do so.

43. Take a Road Trip

Every so often, the best way to clear your mind and escape the daily grind is to hit the road and go on a solo road trip.

Whether you’re exploring the stunning scenery of a national park, cruising down a scenic route, or simply taking the long way home, there’s something liberating about the freedom of the open road.

So pack your bags, grab some snacks, and crank up the tunes – you never know what adventures await on the horizon.

44. Go on a Shopping Spree

A good old-fashioned shopping spree can be just the ticket to boost your mood and elevate your style. Be it splurging on designer clothes, stocking up on the latest tech gadgets, or simply browsing for some fashion inspiration, indulging in a little retail therapy can be just what the doctor ordered.

Plus, blogging can be a great way to improve your writing and communication skills.

46. Get Busy in the Garden

Nature has a way of bringing peace and tranquility to our busy lives, and there’s no better way to connect with the great outdoors than by getting your hands dirty in the garden. It can be tending to a flourishing vegetable patch, creating a colorful flower bed, or simply enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Whatever it may be, gardening is a wonderful way to relax, de-stress, and cultivate your green thumb.

47. Take a an Online Class

There are numerous platforms available that offer an extensive range of courses, including Udemy and Skillshare. Moreover, if you’re interested in pursuing higher education, universities within your state may also offer online classes that span a broad range of subjects.

48. Take A Bubble Bath

Sometimes, the simplest pleasures can be the most luxurious. Taking a bubble bath can be a relaxing and indulgent way to pamper yourself and unwind after a long day.

You can set up the ambience by adding candles and music to create a spa-like atmosphere right in your own bathroom.

FYI: If you are worried about soaking your sensitive skin, Aveeno’s Soothing Bath Treatment is perfect, and the Bubbly Belle Bath Bombs set will add a drop of soothing aromas to your tub.

50. Shop at the Farmer’s Market

A farmers market is just the right place to be if you’re looking for cheap and fresh homegrown produce, meats, and other (usually homemade) products directly from farmers.

The selection of items you can choose from also changes depending on the season, so you might even stumble upon unique fruits and veggies not normally seen in grocery stores, like gooseberries and kohlrabi.

Shopping at your local farmers market is also a great way to support and sustain local businesses, so it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

Fall Activities: Going to a farmer's market

51. Take on a Home Improvement Project

Nothing puts your DIY skills to the test more than a good home improvement project. Take a look around your house and see if there is anything that needs improving. It could be putting fresh paint on your walls, installing new lighting, or fixing that leaky faucet in your kitchen. With the right tools (and YouTube!), you can improve your living space and even add value to your home.

52. Take Up a New Hobby

Life is too short to stick to the same old routine, so why not spice things up with a new hobby? Whether it’s learning how to knit, taking up rock climbing, or even trying your hand at beekeeping, there’s something out there for everyone. Who knows, you might just find your new passion in life.

53. Take Your Dream Car For A Test Ride

If you’ve ever dreamt of driving your dream car, why not take it for a test ride? Visiting a dealership and taking a car for a spin can be a thrilling experience that allows you to get up close and personal with your dream vehicle.

Depending on the dealer/dealership, you can ask (or call) them first if you can take a car for a spin. Some may let you take your dream car for a test drive even if you don’t have any intention of buying it (just let them know beforehand.) But for luxury models, it’s highly unlikely.

54. Travel Solo

Traveling is probably one of the most life-changing things that can happen to you. As you visit ultimate travel destinations, you’re exposed to different experiences, cultures, and perspectives. This, in turn, shapes and changes you as a person. It’s no wonder you’ll hear people talk about finding themselves anew with each adventure they take.

55. Try A New Workout Class

When it comes to physical fitness, it’s always a good idea to switch up your exercise routine every now and then to keep challenging your body in new ways.

For example, if you’re into kickboxing, you can train your flexibility by taking a yoga or Pilates class. Or, if you’re looking to add more strength, you can do the reverse and take up a kickboxing class.

56. Unplug For the Day

In our digital age, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and distracted by our devices, so much so that you might find yourself scrolling for hours on end through social media and whatnot.

Taking a day to unplug from technology can be a refreshing and rejuvenating way to reconnect with the world around us and focus on our mental and physical well-being.

60. Write A Letter To Your Future Self

One powerful way to reflect on your goals, dreams, and aspirations is by  writing a letter to your future self.
