CHECKLIST for your Trip to Paris

  • Book attractions that sell out quickly in advance

How are the crowds in November?

The short November days and crisp temperatures are not luring the big crowds to France’s capital. If there’s at any point something like a low season in Paris, then it is now. It doesn’t mean that you will wander down deserted boulevards, but you will not find yourself queuing for hours either. You also find easier affordable hotel rooms and restaurants that are not booked out all the time.

But still: it’s best to get your tickets in time, here’s why:

In the first week of November, the French kids are on school holidays and November is also a month with a couple of bank holidays. Both are occasions that many French families use for cultural outings and visits.

That’s why you should book tickets to sights and attractions in advance, especially if you plan to visit on weekends.

Below is a list of landmarks that have either the longest queues or are sold out often weeks in advance:

Prices can vary, it’s best if you compare!

Odette in the Quartier Latin
Odette in the Quartier Latin

November is a lovely time to travel to Paris because you can still enjoy most sights and attractions despite the colder season. But you are also freed from the paralyzing tourist crowds that are flocking to Paris most other months. It’s a good trade.

In November, the fall foliage is still beautiful, and it’s the finest time to take a stroll through the beautiful parks of Paris. It’s also enjoyable to take a cruise on the river Seine or spend time in museums and exhibitions.

Autumn in Paris is also a great season if you are in for culinary treats.

No matter what you are interested in, the month of November is a good moment to visit Paris.

How’s the November weather in Paris?

Your vacation in Paris in November will likely be characterized by a mix of sun and rain, with many gray days and cold nights. The early November days can still be pleasant, but the temperatures will drop as the month progresses.

November is also a bit breezy, and you are better prepared for short showers at any time. It rains on average for 9 days in Paris during November, but rest assured: complete rain days are rare.

In November, expect temperatures to range on average from 5 °C (39 °F) and 11ºC (52ºF). So, you can spend your day exploring the city without freezing, but as it gets noticable colder at night, you better look for indoor activities for your Paris nightlife plans.

The days are short in November. The sunrise is not before 8 am, and it gets dark shortly before 6 pm. This is not giving you too much time of exploring Paris by daylight. But on the bright side, you have more than enough time to admire the beautiful illuminations at night.

In 2022, the energy crisis is hitting Europe. In an attempt to save energy, the Eiffel Tower will shut down its illumination shortly before 11 pm.

The Seine in Paris during November
The Seine is a great place for a stroll in Autumn

But no matter how the forecast for your November trip is, it can always be way colder, rainier, or windier than expected. Hence, pack some extra layers and a scarf!

Where to stay in Paris in November?

You probably have your hotel already reserved, but if now, you better do it quickly. Especially if you are traveling to Paris over the Bank holidays or at the end of the month when the Christmas season started.

For exploring the sights and iconic areas, the best hotels in Paris are in the 1st to 9th arrondissements. If you stay in one of these districts, you can be sure to have at least one of the most important sights of Paris within walking distance, if not more.

The central arrondissements are furthermore very safe and convenient with many shops and eateries.

What to wear in Paris in November 2022

In November, you’re best dressed warm and cozy. I still recommend layers because the sun can be still warming you up and there is a significant difference between day and night.

The evenings and early mornings can be icy, so you might want something to put on.

Therefore, you should bring a warm jacket and a sweater. A scarf and a hat shouldn’t be missing from your luggage, either.

There’s one more thing you should have in your purse: A little travel umbrella, just in case, to be prepared for the frequent showers.

In November, Paris has a beautiful Autumn flair

As always, the best plan is to look at the forecast before leaving for Paris and pack accordingly. But generally, you will have rather cold days in Paris during November, no matter if you are granted sunshine or not.

This being said, when packing for your trip to Paris this November, make sure you pack the items below to be prepared for the November weather.

Comfortable Shoes

Also interesting: Best walking shoes for Paris in 2022

There is this very persistent bruit that Parisians are not wearing sneakers and that you would stick out as a tourist if you’d do so. Let me tell you: No. You don’t. Not at all!

As good as every Parisian wears sneakers in their daily to day life. Some Parisians pick more fancy models like these from Michael Kors, while others are wearing more sporty models like Stan Smiths. But sneakers are definitely the way to go in Paris!
If you really want to blend in, get yourself a pair of VEJA. It is a sustainable French brand, and the most beloved Sneakers in Paris these years. (Especially for people 30+)

Warm Merino Socks

What to pack for Paris in January: warm socks, best Merino Socks to keep your feet warm

The very best way to keep your feet warm in November in Paris is by investing in a high-quality pair of Merino Socks. I know it hurts to spend so much on a pair of socks, but from my own (long-distance) hiking and travel experience, I can promise you: it pays off a hundred times.

My favorites are these ones. You find as well cheaper Merino socks, but verify how much Merino they actually contain. The less Merino, the cheaper – and the lower the quality and benefits.

A lightweight Down Jacket

You will never regret having a Down Jacket with you, regardless of where you are traveling to. I even consider a down jacket as one of the most essential travel items. Summer excluded, of course. When traveling for a city break to Paris, you will often leave your hotel early in the morning and won’t come back before late.

A down jacke for early spring is good to have

Therefore, you need to be well-equipped for all sorts of weather! But as you can’t carry a heavy pack sack with you all day, a down jacket is your rescue.

The temperatures in Paris in November are a bit fickle, with potentially considerable differences between day and night. A quality lightweight down jacket like this one fits even in your small day pack or purse! It is truly indispensable for unsteady weather. It prevents you as well from bringing your very heavy and less versatile winter coat.

A warm and cozy scarf

November is often cold and windy, and a scarf is an indispensable item to keep you warm. It is also so versatile. You can use it wrapped around your neck or shoulders, or even use it as a cover when sitting on a terrace in Paris.

A scarf belongs in your bag if you travel to Paris in November. A nice warm scarf also takes no space in your luggage, and you easily can take it off when browsing stores and shops. As a strong plus, a scarf is also a fantastic accessory to dress up your outfit.

A Wool Hat

A cold breeze is very frequent in Paris and you definitely need something to keep your head warm: be it a bonnet, a fancy felt hat, or even a cute beret like this one.

What to pack for Paris in January: a warm wool hat to keep your head warm

I don’t try to fool you here. I know that the beret sounds like a cliché from Emily in Paris, but actually, it’s normal everyday clothing and many French women wear it in Paris. It’s not an item that, makes you stick out. Especially not if you wear a high-quality beret like this one.

A small Travel Umbrella

Truth be told, you shouldn’t travel anywhere in Europe without a little umbrella in your purse.

This one is just the perfect size to do both: fit in your purse and keep you dry. It also comes with a little pouch, so you are not flooding your bag when putting the umbrella back when the rained stopped.

Best things to do in Paris in November 2022

For your trip to Paris in November, you need to know that you’ll be in town during shoulder season. It is not as packed as in October or the warm summer months, but even November has its fair share of visitors.

In early November the French kids are still on holiday break and there are also a few bank holidays during the month. If you are in Paris over the weekend, know that also French tourists are eager to enjoy dinners, culture, and shopping.

Depending on what you want to do and when, tickets for sights and exhibitions might be a rare good. It is overall less tight than at other times of the year. But just to be on the safe side and spare yourself from disappointment, I recommend booking attractions in advance.

Paris in Autumn - Eiffel Tower with Fall Foliage
Paris in the Fall

» Must-Do: Book your tickets in advance!

Like at every popular destination, most people are in Paris for the same reasons: to visit the most famous sights and enjoy the city. But most don’t know that tickets to attractions are indeed limited.

To spare you from disappointment, plan ahead and reserve your tickets in advance.

Here’s why:

  1. The main attractions are in high demand even in November, especially on weekends.
  2. Famous sights like the Eiffel Tower are often booked in advance, especially during vacation times.
  3. Buying tickets on-site regularly includes queuing for hours, which is a huge time loss!

To make sure you get tickets without wasting time standing in line waiting, you want to secure your entrance tickets before you arrive in Paris. The earlier, the better.

These sights are in the HIGHEST demand!

For your convenience, here’s a list of sights that are often booked out.

Arc the Triomphe in November

When you buy tickets at the official attraction’s website, they often don’t offer a cancellation or refund policy and can sell out superfast.

If flexibility is what matters most to you, then I suggest booking your Paris attraction Paris tickets with get your guide.

Get your Guide offers you a flexible 24h cancellation and full reimbursement policy, their website is easy to use and in English, and the tickets are conveniently mobile tickets.

I use them for my bookings as well and never ran into issues.

Best things to do in Paris in November 2022

The French capital is a city that never sleeps and throughout November you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore at your leisure. Here’s our list of the best things to do in Paris during this vacation time!

Visit the Versailles Castle and the Gardens

Book your ticket to Versailles here

If you’re looking for a breathtaking autumn experience, look no further than Versailles Castle. While the château is of course incredible, the gardens are truly spectacular. At this time of year, especially in early November, the fall foliage is at its peak with the leaves turning a beautiful golden hue.

When you’re there, make sure to visit the cute Queen’s Hamlet, a folly commissioned by Marie Antoinette. The little village-like area looks like a fairy tale version of Hobbiton.

To save time on-site, I recommend reserving your tickets in advance. For example, here.

Stroll through the Covered Passages

If you are looking for an activity for rainy and cold November days, a stroll through the covered Arcades is simply perfect.

In the 19th century, the city’s streets were often muddy, so covered passages were created as a way for the wealthy to shop no matter the weather.

Today, around 20 of these passages are still standing, and they’re great places to explore on a cold day. You can have lunch in one of the many cafés and restaurants, do some shopping, or simply admire the beauty of these historic structures. So next time it’s raining in Paris, don’t let the weather ruin your plans. Head to one of the city’s covered passages and enjoy a unique shopping experience.

Enjoy Paris from aboard a Seine Cruise Ship

Book your tickets for an unforgettable Seine Cruise here (for as little as €15!)

No matter the season, you will enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Seine either way.

With a bit of luck, you catch a sunny day in November, and it is still pleasant enough to sit on the outside deck. But it is also lovely, to see the many colorful trees along the Seine shine in their brightest autumn colors. This, mixed with the golden light of fall in Paris... unforgettable!

You can spend a great time doing a cruise on the Seine River. Pick one of many options, suitable for every budget.

→ Budget Option: simple but stunning: 1h Seine Cruise

→ Best Value for Money: 3-Course Dinner Cruise

→ A Special Treat: Gourmet Dinner à la Carte Cruise

You can take in Paris` beauty from an unusual perspective while relaxing and sailing down the Seine.

Alternatively: Take a Cruise on the Canal St. Martin!

If you’re searching for a more unusual experience, book the Seine Cruise and add the Canal St. Martin! It’s a great way to see Paris off the beaten path.

In August, I took my family on one of these cruises – it was such fun cruising through the locks of the canal while listening to the interesting anecdotes the guide was sharing with us.

I booked this tour with GetYourGuide, but is also available through Viator for the same price.

As a plus, the commentary (in English) was outstanding. Even though I live in Paris for almost 2 decades, I’ve learned plenty of interesting things about Paris, and I am sure you’ll love it too.

The Canal heads from the Seine north, through a tunnel under the Bastille. On your trip, you cross many locks that balance the height difference throughout Paris.

  • Jardin Albert Kahn with its Japanese section, the orchard, or the rose garden

Quick Access: Book your ticket to the summit right here

The Eiffel Tower is the most prominent symbol in Paris. It was built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition by Gustave Eiffel. Who, by the way, also built the Statue of Liberty. Anyway, today, the Eiffel Tower is one of the best locations to appreciate a sensational panorama of Paris.

Tour the 2nd level by climbing the stairs or opt-in for an elevator ride. But for most, the real treat is a trip all the way up to the summit of the Eiffel Tower. But rest assured, even if you only make it to the 2nd platform, you’ll get to see breathtaking views.

Explore Montmartre in Autumn

Take this Budget friendly walking tour to discover this charming neighborhood.

Montmartre is honestly one of the most gorgeous and unique districts of Paris. Back in the day, the iconic area was just a little settlement outside the city gates of Paris. But even though Montmartre is a part of Paris for more than 160 now, the neighborhood kept its community charm and strong personality.

Talking a walk through Montmartre is lovely year-round, but during fall, the neighborhood has a special flair. It’s perfect if you’re looking for fall foliage. Montmartre has countless ivy-covered walls that bright up in the most spectacular colors. A perfect frame for picturesque alleys and cute homes.

If you are interested in more than quaint passages and autumn shades, join a guided walking tour. Montmartre has so many mysteries that it is definitely worth it to spend the extra penny to learn about the magic, that lies hidden in anecdotes, stories, and legends.

If you are traveling to Paris on a shoestring budget, consider this tour. It is the most budget-friendly but also best-selling walking tour in Montmartre.

Budget Tip: If you are on a budget and aim at visiting the Eiffel Tower, simply take the stairs to the 2nd floor. It’s the cheapest way to see the Iron Lady.

Just know that tickets for the staircase are only sold on the Eiffel Tower’s official website a couple of weeks in advance. With a bit of luck (and lots of time queuing) you also might get them on the day of your visit to the tower.
