Indefatigable America ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson, 49, has been reported missing after attempting to ski down from the 26,781-foot summit of Nepal’s Manaslu with her partner Jim Morrison Monday morning. Morrison was able to ski down to a lower base camp.
Guides with Shangri-La treks, who were working with Nelson and Morrison, reported she fell only minutes after beginning to ski down from the summit. Reports seem to indicate she lost a ski and then tumbled out of view into a massive vertical crevasse.
It is unknown whether Nelson survived the fall.
Poor weather grounded any helicopter aid flights Monday and a representative of the guiding service says it’s a three-day trek to reach the area Nelson was last spotted.
The same morning, an avalanche elsewhere on the mountain killed one climber and trapped a dozen others.
