Top Nationwide Music Festivals & the RV Parks Nearby

To pass the time while cruising the highway in a motorhome, it is not uncommon for campers to jam out to their favorite playlists. Now picture yourself navigating your travel trailer or other RV while listening to your favorite bands, and then arriving at a destination where they are performing live! This musical dream can become a reality if you plan accordingly. RVT has provided a list of some of the top nationwide music festivals to attend as you make your way across the country in your RV.

Lollapalooza – Chicago, Illinois

As one of the largest music festivals in the world, Lollapalooza is a four-day extravaganza featuring some of the top musical artists covering all types of musical genres. Since this event is located in downtown Chicago at Grant Park, RV parking sites have their own tradeoffs. If you are interested in dry camping in your RV without any accessibility to electricity or water hookups, check out McCormick Place. Though the amenities are limited, the site is within one mile of the festival. Its convenience will allow you to easily make your way to and from Lollapalooza. On the other hand, if you require more amenities for your RV, you will need to drive about an hour away to Kankakee South KOA. This quiet campground outside of the city will provide a halcyon haven after the raucous musical festival. Since Lollapalooza sells out annually, be sure to plan your trip well in advance.

Summerfest – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Regarded as “The World’s Biggest Outdoor Music Festival,” Summerfest is a prominent music gathering which attracts over 800,000 attendees per year. There is no shortage of musical talent at Summerfest, as hundreds of artists take the stage over a span of just three weekends. Since the event is located at Henry Maier Festival Park next to Lake Michigan, RV spaces are not available at the event. However, the nearby Wisconsin State Fair Park is a great location where all types of RVs are permitted. Summerfest is also known to provide a high-caliber culinary arsenal, featuring local Milwaukee classics. So, if you plan on attending Summerfest, you won’t need to pack too much food.

Coachella – Indio, California

As one of the largest and most exciting music festivals in the U.S., Coachella is arguably one of the best music events to visit. Featuring artists from various genres, including rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, and EDM, you’ll find all types of music lovers here. If you plan to take your RV to Coachella, check out Indian Waters RV Resort and Cottages. Approximately 3 miles from the event, this resort will cover all your accommodations while you’re enjoying the musical festivities. With spacious RV sites, full hookups with 50-amp service, and other luxurious amenities, you have the option of both camping and glamping.

Bonnaroo – Manchester, Tennessee

The word “Bonnaroo” is Creole slang for “good stuff”, and this event does not disappoint in good music. Perceived as more than simply a festival, Bonnaroo exists as both a subculture and a movement. Featuring top artists, this annual event at “The Farm” – Great Stage Park, Tennessee – draws in people from across the world. Unlike other musical festivals, Bonnaroo has numerous amenities for RVers. But before you load up your RV and head over to this lively event, there are a couple things to know. First, all RVs require a parking pass – pricing varies depending on the type of site you use at The Farm. Second, Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes are permitted; however, if you plan to bring an additional vehicle, it will require a companion pass.

South By Southwest – Austin, Texas

A multifaceted event that combines festivals, conferences, and concerts, South By Southwest (SXSW) is ideal for the type of music listener who also enjoys innovation. Since SXSW is in the heart of Austin, the nearest RV campgrounds are located just outside of downtown Austin. Head east on the outskirts of Austin and you’ll find Austin East KOA Holiday, providing ample amenities outside of the event. Due to its proximity, traveling from the campgrounds to the event via public transit or ride-share apps is quick and painless. If you desire a slightly further commute to and from SXSW, check out McKinney Falls State Park. With over 80 campsites, each with hookups for water and electricity, you can escape the SXSW pandemonium and relax in the comfort of your camper.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival – New Orleans, Louisiana

One of the longest-running music festivals in the U.S., the New Orleans Jazz Fest celebrates the roots of modern music – jazz, blues, and classic rock. While enjoying the jazzy music festivities, make sure to taste the exquisite Louisiana culinary fare, as this event is also known to showcase fantastic food. Although the New Orleans Jazz Fest does not provide RV accommodations, the nearby campgrounds offer shuttle services to the event. There are numerous sites to choose from that are all within seven miles of the New Orleans Fair Grounds, including the French Quarter RV Resort, Pelican RV Park New Orleans, and Three Oaks and a Pine RV Park.

For the music-lover, attending one of these festivals is a must. As many of these events occur in different months, consider planning a season of traveling to various music festivals in your RV. If you are interested in purchasing a new or used RV, check out RVT.com for current listings.
