POTD: A Rare Brazillian Bird – Mekanika URU Submachine Gun

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a rare bird of sorts. This is the Brazilian Mekanika URU Submachine Gun. The word URU is derived from a literal Brazilian bird. It uses a 30-round magazine and is chambered for 9mm Parabellum. It is noted for its simplicity and its high rate of fire ( a blistering 750 rounds per minute). As I mentioned this gun is well regarded mainly for its simplicity. It has no pins or screws and yet it has a total of only 17 separate parts. A majority of the disassembly is done by capturing detent buttons and unscrewing different parts.

“Manufactured between 1977 and 1985 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the URU SMG is a compact open-bolt submachine gun in the vein of the STEN or Sterling. Fixed sights with standard maker and import marks on the receiver. Equipped with a right handed selector switch “S SA A” (safe, semi, full), vented barrel heat shield, ribbed “kmk” grip and a detachable buttstock. Includes extra magazine.”
