Your World Championship Means Nothing in Kansas: Peter Sagan Gets Shelled

Peter Sagan may be a UCI World Champion — but can he conquer Kansas?

The ever-enigmatic Sagan would have sung a different tune if you would have told him he “wasn’t in Kansas anymore” this summer. Because that’s exactly where he was — whether he liked it or not.

Watch Sagan and Team TotalEnergies teammate Daniel Oss take on the rolling hills of UNBOUND Gravel in this short Specialized clip.

Comedic tidbits pepper the edit like grazing cattle on the Kansas countryside.

“What’d you hear about Peter?” the cameraman asks one rider.

“Couldn’t hang,” he replies, shaking his head. “Someone said, ‘He’s World Champion, but he’s not Kansas Champion.’”

Sagan did finish — 63rd overall in 5:55:17. Ethan Overson of Longmont, Colo., took the overall win in 5:01:01. You can see full results of the race online.

He’s had addresses in the Adirondack Mountains, Las Vegas, and somehow Kansas, but his heart belongs in the Texas hill country.
