9 Best Travel Tips to Save Money on Your Trip

There are so many ways to save money on travel. But, it’s going to take a little time and research to find the ones that work for you. Let me help! Here are my insider travel tips and tricks to keep you flexing that passport for as much and as long as possible.

Isn’t life just getting more and more expensive by the day? I feel your pain. I know that with all of us tightening our belts, the opportunities to travel are getting less and less. You can still do it though!

I’ve put together all of my top tricks and travel tips to save money on your adventures. If you manage to cut a few costs here and there, it means you can travel for further for longer.

Best Travel Tips to Save Money on Your Trip

1. Compare websites for prices

It’s always worth doing a Google search for your activity or hotel and comparing the prices to get the best deal. Sometimes you can find the same attraction or hotel at wildly different prices. It really does pay to spend a few minutes (sometimes hours!) on researching your trip fully. Look on comparison sites like Destinia to compare affordable hotels, flights and trips.

2. Travel in the off season

One of the best ways to save money on travel is to plan your trips during the off-season. Prices for accommodation, flights, and activities are generally lower during this period due to decreased demand. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also enjoy fewer crowds and a more authentic experience at your chosen destination.

If possible, it’s so much better and cheaper to travel in the off season.

3. Be flexible with your travel dates

Being flexible with your travel dates can be a game-changer when it comes to saving money. If you have the luxury of choosing when to travel, try to avoid peak travel seasons and weekends, as prices tend to be significantly higher during these periods. Instead, opt for mid-week travel which often comes with attractive discounts.

For example, we’re off to Budapest on Wednesday (to Saturday) – and the flights were £30 from Bournemouth Airport. Bargain!

4. Buy cut-price experiences from Amazon

It’s possibly one of the lesser-known departments of Amazon’s gigantic online superstore, but the tech firm does, in fact, sell experiences — spa days, afternoon teas, indoor skydiving… that kind of thing. If one takes your fancy, add it to your wishlist. That way, you’ll get a notification any time there’s a deal on and its price has been reduced.

5. Embrace public transport

Public transportation is not only an economical way to get around but also offers a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. Research the public transport options available at your destination, such as buses, trams, or metro systems, as they’re generally much cheaper than taxis or rental cars.

Walk or cycle as much as possible when you get there to explore smaller areas, and you’ll save even more money.

6. Eat like a local

Sampling local cuisine is undoubtedly an essential part of any travel experience, but dining out for every meal can quickly devour your budget. To save money on food, explore local markets and supermarkets, and prepare simple meals at your accommodation if possible.

Embrace street food, which not only offers more authentic flavours but is usually mote affordable too. Don’t be afraid to indulge in a picnic in a picturesque local park, too!

7. Pack light to avoid baggage fees

Most airlines have strict baggage policies and charge additional fees for excess luggage. Pack smartly and aim to travel with carry-on luggage only. Not only will this save you money, but it also eliminates the risk of lost or delayed baggage. This is one of the reasons we’ve got the aforementioned Budapest trip so cheaply.

You could consider doing laundry during your trip – especially if you’re staying somewhere with a washing machine – or wearing your bulkiest items on travel days to maximise your packing space. Definitely one of my top travel tips!

8. Stay connected with Wi-Fi

International roaming charges for data and calls can be incredibly expensive. Instead of relying on your mobile network, take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots available at your accommodation, cafes, and public spaces.

Download offline maps and important travel apps in advance to navigate without using cellular data while exploring a destination.

You can also look at buying an eSIM – I did this in Jordan and it saved a lot of hassle. Most new phones will also offer the ability to flick between the SIM cards as well. It makes staying connected a lot easier!

9. Utilise discount cards and city passes

Many cities have discount cards or city passes that offer discounted access to multiple attractions and even public transportation. These cards are often valid for a specific number of days and can save you a significant amount of money if you plan on visiting several paid attractions. Research and consider purchasing these cards in advance to make the most of your sightseeing adventures.

Go City and CityPASS are two of the biggest and most well known. I find that when you have these in your pocket it encourages you to see even MORE of the city you’re in. Always a good thing!
