Our Luxury UK Treehouse Getaway

I’ve dreamed about staying in one of Ramside Hall’s luxury treehouses since the Durham hotel announced they were building them, so when we booked an overnight stay for our first wedding anniversary I was thrilled.

Would they live up to the hype?

The Ramside Hall treehouses offer a truly unique dog-friendly UK getaway experience, with private sunken hot tubs on each balcony.

We’ve been lucky enough to experience some of the best glamping accommodation in North East England, but this was really something special!

You can check availability and book a stay here (pick the ‘chalet’ option).

Treehouse guests can make use of Ramside Hall’s spa. Ramside Hall is one of the best spa hotels in North East England, with an outdoor pool and range of treatment options. Located near County Durham‘s coast and just 17 miles from Newcastle, it’s a popular choice for couples planning a romantic escape.

I recommend lunch in the spa restaurant, Fusion. Before checking in, Tom and I treated ourselves to a feast of sushi, dim sum, duck pancakes and delicious squid. The cocktail list embraces Asian flavours.

Now, let’s have a look around those treehouses…

We stayed in the Cuckoo Studio, which shares an entrance with the Cuckoo Suite. A wooden walkway leads to the front door and the porch area splits off into the two separate areas.

A family with children were staying in the other part of our treehouse, but we didn’t hear a peep from them and it very much felt like we were enjoying a private retreat.

Inside the treehouse, the vibe is one of rustic luxury that fits well with the woodland surrounds.

With a rainforest green colour palette and faux fur throws and exposed wooden beams, the space is a far cry from the tree houses we played in (or in my case, wished for) as kids.

A sparse entryway is flooded with natural light by a glass wall which looks out onto the private sunken hot tub, and thoughtfully placed plants lend the deck a secluded feel.

In the main area, a 7 foot bed is set against one wall while a heavy-looking dresser sits in a corner with a squashy leather sofa opposite.

At the push of a button, the floor-to-ceiling curtains part to reveal sliding doors onto another deck. Beyond, the last hole on Ramside Hall’s golf course.

The freestanding copper bath is the focal point of the open bathroom suite, though it’s almost outshone by the double walk-in rainfall showers.

Indulgence is encouraged with complimentary Elemis toiletries, soft bath robes and a Nespresso machine. There’s a small fridge with fresh milk, so you can have your morning coffee just the way you like it.

We sipped champagne in the hot tub before getting ready for dinner in The Rib Room.

A quick call to reception and a chauffeur was at our door in minutes, ready to whisk us off to the main hotel. You can even use this shuttle to get to your treehouse when you first check in! It was great not to have to worry about who would drive.

I’d never eaten at The Rib Room before but would definitely go back.

The dining room’s ambience reminded me of an upmarket New York steakhouse, and their chateaubriand didn’t disappoint. I’ll have to add this place to my guide to the best places to eat in County Durham!

After dinner, you could sip a drink in the lounge bar, but why not make the most of your treehouse?

After a restful night’s sleep and a morning hot tub session, we breakfasted in the Pemberton’s Carvery restaurant. The cooked breakfast was lovely but I think I would have preferred to eat breakfast in that gigantic bed!

When that’s the only criticism of a hotel, you really can’t complain.

Would I recommend a stay in the Ramside Hall treehouses? Absolutely. Our night there was a very memorable way to celebrate our anniversary and perfect for a romantic couples break.

Each Treehouse can be booked as the whole house, offering three bedroom or can be split in to a one bedroom or two bedroom suites. There was a hen party in the adjacent treehouse, which I was a bit envious of! I’m sure the larger houses would be fabulous for a group trip.
