One Day in Heidelberg Itinerary 2023 – A Memorable Day in Germany’s Enchanting City

Heidelberg, Germany was actually one of the first cities I was able to explore when arriving in Germany. I had just recently moved to Germany and flew into Frankfurt to be greeted by my boyfriend – now husband, as he whisked me away to where we would be living. Heidelberg was one of the first places on my list that I wanted to see and we went just the following weekend!

There are a lot of beautiful things about Heidelberg that make it quite a special place in my heart and can be a hidden gem. I have been back many times now and I want to share some of my favorite places that you should not miss during your one day in Heidelberg.

How to Spend 24 Hours in Heidelberg, Germany

If you are short on time, these are some of Heidelberg’s main attractions and the best things to do in Heidelberg, Germany. It can be an easy day trip from Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt and Frankfurt airport, and more.

Heidelberg Castle or Schloss Heidelberg

Heidelberg Castle - One Day in Heidelberg

Start your day by visiting the iconic Heidelberg Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city with spectacular views. Take a leisurely stroll through the castle grounds or a guided tour, marvel at the impressive ruins, and enjoy panoramic views of the city of Heidelberg and the Neckar River below. The highest peak near the castle courtyard is where you will probably take the most pictures of the beautiful panoramic views and see the best views. You can either hike up which takes about 15 minutes or take the funicular railway up to the top.

Heidelberg Castle, or Heidelberger Schloss in German, is a renowned landmark and one of the most impressive castle ruins in Germany. One of the castle’s most iconic features is the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s largest wine barrel housed within the castle’s Great Hall. This massive barrel could hold up to 220,000 liters of wine and became a symbol of the region’s viticulture.

Be sure to take the time to see the Deutsches Apotheken-Museum (a German apothecary museum) and Heidelberg Tun while on the Castle grounds. Book a private tour or your tickets.

Old Town (Altstadt)

After the castle, make your way down to the charming Old Town. Wander through the cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings, visit the Marktplatz (Market Square), and explore the bustling Hauptstrasse, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe, filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. From here you can walk down the main shopping street which is one of the world’s longest continuous shopping street. You can also enjoy a nice walking tour of the town.

Church of the Holy Spirit

Don’t miss the Church of the Holy Spirit, a beautiful church located in the heart of the Old Town. Take a moment to appreciate its Gothic architecture and step inside to admire the intricate details and peaceful atmosphere. If you are interested in cathedrals or churches within Europe or specifically in Germany, then by all means check this place out.

Karl Theodor Bridge aka The Old Bridge

Karl Theodor Bridge in Heidelberg, Germany

Just a short walk from the church is the Karl Theodor Bridge. The Karl Theodor Bridge, commonly known as the famous Old Bridge of Heidelberg(Alte Brücke) in Heidelberg, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a significant historical and architectural gem. Spanning the Neckar River, it connects the Old Town (Altstadt) with the Neuenheim district.

The Old Bridge has a rich history dating back to the 18th century, although it stands on the site of previous bridges that date back even further. The bridge was originally constructed between 1786 and 1788 during the reign of Elector Karl Theodor, hence its name. It replaced a series of wooden bridges that had been repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars.

Philosopher’s Walk

After a delicious lunch at one of the local eateries, head to the Philosophers’ Walk or Philosophers’ way (Philosophenweg), a scenic path on the northern side of the Neckar River. This tranquil trail offers stunning views of Heidelberg, the river, and the surrounding hills. It’s a perfect place to relax, take in the natural beauty, and enjoy a peaceful walk.

Student Jail (Studentenkarzer)

For a unique glimpse into Heidelberg’s university (the oldest university in Germany) traditions, visit the Student Jail. Historically, misbehaving students were temporarily imprisoned here, and their sentences were often documented through creative graffiti on the walls. Explore this quirky museum to learn more about the fascinating student culture of Heidelberg.

Neckar River Cruise

End your day with a memorable boat cruise along the Neckar River. Admire the cityscape and the castle from a different perspective while enjoying the serene waters. Many cruises offer dinner options, allowing you to savor a delightful meal while enjoying the scenic views. Book your river cruise here.
