7 Cheapest Places to Fly from Atlanta

Have you been planning a vacation by researching the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta? If you’re looking for some amazing fun on the run, you might want to head down to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and hop on a plane to anywhere else! Well, not just anywhere. You probably want to fly somewhere on a budget. That’s why I’m here: to list off for you all the cheapest flights from Atlanta!

I’ll be the first to admit that there is plenty to do in Atlanta. From Zoo Atlanta to the Georgia Aquarium to the State Farm Arena, you can’t say this city is in need of more activities. But when you’re a longtime resident of anywhere, sometimes you just need to take a hike. If you just want to get on a plane and go, I’ll be listing some of the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta. You really have so many options, including locations in the United States or even off in South America, Asia, Europe, or anywhere else.

Now, I understand that finding cheap flights out of Atlanta might not be the easiest thing to do. After all, Hartsfield-Jackson is legitimately the busiest airport not only in the United States but in the world. More than 75 million passengers have been moving through the terminals each year recently. Doing things cheap and easy here may seem a bit out of reach. However, I promise you can find cheap flights from Atlanta if you know where to look.

And I have wrangled up some of the best ones and presented them here!

My #1 tip for finding the cheapest flights from Atlanta

To find some truly cheap flights from Atlanta, you might need a little direction. That’s why I want to take a moment to share the best tool I know to fly basically anywhere you want for dirt cheap.

I have been using this amazing site called Going (previously known as Scott’s Cheap Flights) to find the best deals on both domestic and international flights. It’s as easy as peach pie. For the free version, you just enter your email, input your origin point (say, Atlanta) and destination, and Going will send you email alerts with the cheapest flights it can find. Those include mistake fares and other low-cost options. I have cumulatively saved thousands of dollars on air travel over the last few years, including on a recent $700 flight to one of my favorite European cities, Vienna. I save about $350 on average when I use flight deals from Going.

That’s the free version of Going. There’s a $49/year premium one, too, which sends you more flights, and a lot sooner than the free version does. That way, you can really start to take advantage of the bargains and fly to your preferred destinations on the cheap. If you do a lot of flying, the premium Going might be for you. If you’re just getting into the world of digital nomads, the free one should have enough to satisfy for now.

Other considerations when finding the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta

Despite Atlanta being home to the busiest airport in the world, you can fly out of this hub to plenty of cool places in this country and others. And you can do it all for cheap. The important point to remember, though, is that flight prices almost never stay the same. Conditions around the economy and the seasons of the year can cause ticket prices to fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. For example, prices on Caribbean flights will tend to be more expensive in the Southern Hemisphere’s summer season. That’s when the Caribbean weather is perfect.

You’ll also have to consider where you’re flying to in relation to Atlanta. The cheapest places to fly from Atlanta will tend to be geographically closer to the city. A simple example would be a roundtrip flight from Atlanta to Tampa, Florida, costing less than $50. In the meantime, a flight from Chicago to Tampa costs more than $100.

Cheapest places to fly from Atlanta in 2023: the best flight deals

Taking into account all of these factors, I’m now going to list seven of the cheapest flights to take from Atlanta. If you’ve been looking to get out there in the world more, here are the best places to go.

1. Atlanta to Dallas, Texas ($54 roundtrip)

Our first cheap flight takes us from Atlanta to the friendly Southern city of Dallas, Texas. This is a cheap flight if there ever was one. You can fly from Atlanta to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) for a shockingly low $89 roundtrip. Although Dallas and Atlanta share status as two major metropolises of the American South, you’ll find plenty of unique things to love about this third-largest city in Texas.

Planning your trip to Dallas

If this is your first time visiting Dallas, you may want to start out your trip by checking out some of the most touristy attractions in the area. The Dallas World Aquarium comes to mind here, as does the nearby Dallas Zoo, where you can see thousands of animals from different parts of the world.

For a more relaxed set of activities, you’ll want to take in some international culture at the Dallas Museum of Art, meander through the shops and restaurants of the Bishop Arts District, or stroll along the Katy Trail. The trail is a paved walkway that runs for 3.5 miles through a variety of urban and green spaces in Dallas.

If you’re more into the history and heritage of the places you visit, you may want to stop off at the Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park. It’s a 19th-century living-history museum showing what life was like for Dallas residents centuries ago. And you’d be remiss to leave Dallas before spending a few hours at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to learn about the legacy of President John F. Kennedy.

Being a Southern city, Dallas is great to travel to at any time of year, with hot, sunny summers and cooler, but not cold, winters. Ticket prices are a bit higher in the prime summer traveling season. But no matter when you go, you’re sure to enjoy your time in Dallas, one of the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta.

2. Atlanta to Toronto, Ontario, Canada ($158 roundtrip)

This next cheap trip from Atlanta takes us out of the country and into Canada’s most populous city of Toronto. The size and number of things to do make Toronto a true beast of a city, but you can get there for surprisingly cheap, with a roundtrip ticket from Atlanta to Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ) coming in at an easy $158.

What to do in Toronto

One of the things that Toronto is most known for is its multiculturalism. The city’s more than 2.7 million residents speak languages that include English, French, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Punjabi, and Tagalog. You can take in a lot of this culture at city events held throughout the year. Depending on when you visit, you can check out the Toronto International Film Festival, the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, and the Taste of the Danforth Greek festival.

Toronto’s appreciation for all things multicultural is reflected in many of the other things to do in the city. You can enjoy some ethnic foods at the indoor St. Lawrence Market, take in some history at the Royal Ontario Museum, and shop at all the street vendors on Queen Street West.

Even if you stayed for a month, you’d probably still have things to do in Toronto. But if I could make one last cultural recommendation here, Niagara Falls is only about 90 minutes away from the city. If you’ve never seen it before, either from the U.S. or Canadian side, it really is everything you’ve imagined. You can grab some incredible photo ops from the observation areas or take a Niagara City Cruises boat out on the river to get up close and personal. “Water” you waiting for?

Toronto is like other temperate climates, so you can expect hot summers and cold, snowy winters. If you want to experience fewer tourists and more moderate weather, head to Toronto in spring or fall.

3. Atlanta to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands ($213 roundtrip)

When you’re looking for the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta, you have to consider destinations beyond your shores. Sometimes, though, those places are just short jumps away and are still U.S. territory! In this case, I’m talking about the U.S. Virgin Islands, located in the Caribbean just southeast of Puerto Rico. You can get a roundtrip ticket from Atlanta to Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on the island of St. Thomas for around $213.

Planning your time in the U.S. Virgin Islands

The airport lies within the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie. That’s probably where you’ll want to start your trip. The great thing about the U.S. Virgin Islands is that it perfectly combines the vibes of untouched Caribbean paradise and tourist-friendly cityscapes.

You may want to kick things off by kicking way back and hanging around one of the gorgeous beaches on St. Thomas. Magens Bay, Sapphire Beach, and Lindquist Beach are tourist favorites. It’s on these beaches that you’ll find the quintessential Caribbean landscape: white-sand beaches lapped by pristine blue waters.

Once you’re done soaking up some sun, you may want to head back into town to do some duty-free shopping, try some fried plantains and conch fritters, and check out the Danish colonial architecture. Of course, you can also take a ferry or plane to another of the islands. Maybe you want to visit the city of Christiansted on St. Croix or Cruz Bay on St. John.

Ultimately, you can sunbathe, snorkel, shop, and indulge in local cuisine on all the islands, and you can get there on a budget. That makes the trip to St. Thomas, and to the U.S. Virgin Islands in general, one of the best and cheapest flights from Atlanta. The best time to go is from April to June, when you still get beautiful weather but without the high hotel rates.

4. Atlanta to Chicago, Illinois ($54 roundtrip)

You might think that if you’ve seen one U.S. metropolis, you’ve seen them all, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While Atlanta has that chill and laid-back feeling of a true Southern city, the Midwestern urban jungle of Chicago is a bit more fast-paced. If you’ve never been to the Windy City to experience that kind of thing, you may want to schedule your next trip to Chicago. Both you and your wallet are going to love getting here, since, at a $54 roundtrip, Chicago is one of the cheapest places to fly from Atlanta.

What to do when visiting Chicago

You’ll probably fly into Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), one of the busiest airports in the world. After that, you certainly have your choice of things to do in this bustling city of 2.7 million people. There’s a whole slew of tourist-heavy activities to try. Those include visiting the Ledge and Skydeck on top of Willis Tower, seeing more than 300,000 pieces at the Art Institute of Chicago, and checking out the Field Museum of Natural History.

Once you’ve crossed all that off your list, it’ll be time to head outdoors for some more fun. The Magnificent Mile is famed for its upscale shops, restaurants, and things to see along the way, such as the Chicago Water Tower. You can then bring the whole family for a leisurely stroll though Millennium Park, where you’ll pass by gardens, sitting areas, and vibrant architectural works. Oh, and while you’re doing all this, absolutely do not forget to indulge in some Chicago cuisine favorites, including deep-dish pizza and Italian beef sandwiches!

Chicago experiences four seasons, so the time of year you go is up to you. Just be warned that winters can be harsh here, while summer presents higher rates for accommodations. Spring and fall are going to be your best bets.

4. Atlanta to Oslo, Norway ($333 roundtrip)

Next up on our list of cheap flights from Atlanta, we’re headed to Oslo, Norway, one of the cheapest places to fly to in Europe. This trip will take you across the Atlantic to Scandinavia. It’s quite some distance, and that means a roundtrip is a bit more expensive than other prices you’ve seen on this list. But for around $333, you can’t really argue with a vacation to this truly unique and progressive Northern European city!

Planning your time in Oslo

Upon landing at Oslo Airport (OSL), you may feel overwhelmed at everything there is to do here. After all, the country has thousands of years of history. Well, that’s actually a good angle to start with! If you want to learn a bit about Norwegian history, make your first stop Akershus Fortress. This castle was built in the late 13th century as a bastion of city defense. These days, the fortress retains a military presence but is still a popular tourist attraction. You can tour it during the summer months while also visiting the on-site Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and Norway Resistance Museum.

If you want to continue your education in Norwegian culture, head over to the Oslo Opera House for a show. You can also learn about painter Edvard Munch at the Munch Museum. Then, go check out all kinds of Norwegian art history at the National Museum of Art.

Moving on to the city of Oslo itself, you can walk along the Aker Brygge promenade. It’s an old industrial shipyard that has been transformed into a ritzy area for shopping and eating. You may also enjoy getting some fresh air in Frogner Park, Oslo’s largest public park. Contained within it is Vigeland Sculpture Park. It contains more than 200 sculptures by Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland.

From skiing to exploring to sailing the fjords, there is plenty to do in the Oslo area. The best time to visit is summer, when you’ll get the warmest temperatures (if you can call them that) of 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, though springtime is not bad, either.

5. Atlanta to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ($263 roundtrip)

This next cheap flight from Atlanta will take you from one corner of North America to the other. This time, we’re going to Vancouver in Canada’s lovely British Columbia province. A flight from Atlanta to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will cost you only around $263. That’s a small price to pay for one of the happiest and most thriving cities in all of Canada.

How to have a good time in Vancouver

Vancouver is the epitome of a bustling metropolis. Its iconic skyline overlooks the waters of the Strait of Georgia, which separates Vancouver from Vancouver Island. The city itself features a strong and diverse mix of people and cultures. All this contributes to Vancouver being the welcoming city that it is.

If you want to take in some of this melting-pot mentality, head first to Vancouver’s Chinatown. This area was established in the 1880s. That makes it one of the oldest Chinatowns not just in Canada but in North America. There, you can enjoy some Chinese-Canadian cuisine and also get some shopping done. From here, you might want to head over to Punjabi Market to experience authentic Indian food and culture. Depending on when you’re in Vancouver, you can also take part in special annual events such as the Powell Street Festival. This event celebrates Japanese-Canadian culture.

If you want to explore the city itself, there’s more than enough to keep you occupied. Catch some rays at Kitsilano Beach. Relax in the thousand-acre Stanley Park. Visit the Museum of Anthropology. If you have an extra few days, take a ferry over to Vancouver Island to visit the province’s capital of Victoria and explore the famous old-growth forests.

The best time to visit Vancouver is spring through fall. That’s when the weather is nicest, though you’ll deal with more crowds, too. You might also be surprised to learn that winters in Vancouver are mild with little snow. That makes the off-season an option, as well.

6. Atlanta to Washington, D.C. ($38 roundtrip)

Getting around in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is a popular tourist destination for Americans and international tourists. It’s the U.S. capital city, for one thing, where you can find all the institutions of government. It’s also home to a ton of activities, museums, shopping, and outdoor things to do. The best part is that so much of it is actually free!

If you have never been to Washington before, there’s no shame in starting off your trip with all the most popular attractions. After all, there’s a reason they draw tens of millions of visitors a year!

You’ll probably want to head to the National Mall first, the giant green park in the middle of downtown Washington. From there, you will be close to such famous landmarks as the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. You’re also relatively close to multiple Smithsonian museums as well as the U.S. Capitol. All of these you can tour for free (though you’ll need to secure passes in advance for the Capitol).

7. Atlanta to New York, New York ($52 roundtrip)

Rounding out this list of cheap flights from Atlanta is the $52 roundtrip to the Big Apple, the greatest city in the world, the newest of Yorks: New York City. With a ticket to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and back again for that price, how can you say no to a trip to this city, where you literally will never run out of things to do?

Traversing New York City

Where to begin? If you want to get your bearings in this infamously sprawling metropolis, why not head up before you head out? Get some breathtaking views of the city from One World Observatory at One World Trade Center, the Top of the Rock observatory on top of Rockefeller Center, or the deck on top of the Empire State Building.

From there, you may want to explore the massive acreage of Central Park, where you can find ponds, fields, fountains, and seating to suit however you’re feeling. Since you’re already outside, why not combine this outing with some extravagant shopping on 5th Avenue, Madison Avenue, or the Shops at Columbus Circle?

If you want to get educated in some history and culture while you’re in town, New York has plenty of that. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, and the Guggenheim can offer you days of exploration. You can also take the ferry out to Ellis Island to tour the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, or to Liberty Island to visit the Statue of Liberty Museum and, of course, climb the Statue of Liberty.
