Are Cayman Islands Safe? Travel Advisory 2023

The crime rate in the Cayman Islands is quite low, although petty crimes such as purse snatching and pickpocketing do still happen from time to time. Overall, it is quite safe to visit the Cayman Islands right now.

The low crime rate is one of the reasons why the Cayman Islands are such a popular destination for tourists who make their way to the Caribbean Sea. As such, tourists can safely visit the Cayman Islands as long as they follow some standard safety advice.

Much of this advice is fairly straightforward since the Cayman Islands is generally very safe for tourists.

Crime in the Cayman Islands

As stated, the crime rate in the Cayman Islands is very low. The intentional homicide rate in the Cayman Islands is only eight per 100,000 people. The U.S. State Department Travel Advisory for the Cayman Islands is level 1, which translates into exercise normal precautions.

Also, these homicides happen among local citizens of the Cayman Islands, not to tourists visiting the Cayman Islands. Some petty crimes still happen, of course, as previously mentioned.

Tourists should store their valuables in the hotel safe. However, tourists should ensure that the hotel safe that they use to store their valuables is bolted to either the floor or the wall.

Tourists should have a photocopy of the identification page of their passport on their person at all times. They should also make sure that they do not bring any valuables with them when they go to the beach.

Additionally, tourists should make sure that they do not go to a dark beach alone at night. It is important that tourists do not go to any deserted areas alone at night, either, since that could put them in danger.

Even so, the Cayman Islands and Grand Cayman, more specifically, are quite safe. Violent crime rarely happens to tourists in the Cayman Islands.

Jamaica is one example of a Caribbean island that can be more dangerous than the Cayman Islands.

Are the Cayman Islands safe for passengers of cruise ships?

When people travel to the Cayman Islands by cruise ship, they will arrive at Grand Cayman, specifically at George Town. Cruise ships are a popular way of traveling to the Cayman Islands.

Thankfully, the Cayman Islands are quite safe for cruise ship passengers, as well. People can generally walk around George Town without worrying too much about putting themselves in danger.

It is important that people make sure to follow the safety advice outlined in the previous section. However, as long as they do so, the chance that they will find themselves in danger in the Cayman Islands as a tourist is pretty slim.

Buses and taxis are two means of transportation that tourists often use when visiting the Cayman Islands. Thankfully, the local buses and taxis are safe for passengers of cruise ships to use.

Cruise ship passengers can safely depart from George Town’s cruise ship port and explore the surrounding areas. There are many restaurants and shops located outside of the cruise ship port in George Town.

Cruise ship passengers can visit these restaurants and shops safely, as long as they keep an eye out for purse snatchers and pickpockets.

Should tourists avoid any areas in Grand Cayman?

Tourists do not need to avoid many parts of Grand Cayman, generally speaking. It is best to avoid local bars in George Town if it is a Friday night.

However, even these bars on Friday nights are still fairly safe for tourists. There are no large areas of Grand Cayman that tourists need to actively avoid on a regular basis.

Closing thoughts on the safety of the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are one of the safer islands in the Caribbean Sea. That is one of the reasons why more than 2 million tourists travel to the Cayman Islands each year.

The vast majority of those tourists do not encounter any major safety issues during these visits. Because of this, the Cayman Islands are a great tourist destination in the Caribbean Sea if tourists want a safe experience.
