Quirky Places to Stay in London

These hotels are spread out across London. While many are central, I’ve included a few in less obvious areas like Hackney, where you can live like a local in one of the coolest neighborhoods in London.

Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

1. Treehouse Hotel

I’ll start my list with one of the most unique hotels in London. The Treehouse Hotel in Marylebone not only has unique stylish decor, but also stunning views of the London Eye, The Shard, Regent’s Park, and Canary Wharf.

Located near the iconic BBC Broadcasting House and a short walk from Regent Street and Bond Street, it’s in a great location in the heart of London.

Add to that a hip rooftop oasis and cozy, colorful guest rooms and it’s an all-around great place to stay. You can book a room at the Treehouse Hotel here.

2. Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

Another quirky hotel in London is the Sunborn. This property is housed on a superyacht in Royal Victoria Dock. This unusual accommodation features city views, dining options including afternoon tea, and luxurious guest rooms.

The Sunborn is located less than a minute’s walk from ExCeL London, so it’s a unique place to stay if you’re in town for a trade show or conference there. You can book a room here.

3. The Standard

If land is more your thing, The Standard is a great option. This quirky hotel near London’s King’s Cross neighborhood offers over 260 rooms.

From snug spaces to terraced suites with outdoor bathtubs overlooking the beautiful St Pancras station, this hotel has a lot going for it.

The Standard has colorful decor and hip style throughout its cocktail bar, restaurant, late-night lounge, and other public areas, too. You can see more and book a room here.

St Pancras, London

4. The Portobello Hotel

If you want to stay in a quirky hotel in London that’s in a local neighborhood, The Portobello Hotel is just the place.

This luxurious boutique bolthole features interiors that channel the bohemian spirit of Notting Hill and the famous Portobello Road Market.

This unique hotel is also popular with celebrities. Rumor has it Johnny Depp and Kate Moss once bathed in champagne in Room 16. If you want to follow in their (bare)foot steps, you can book a room here.

5. The Exhibitionist Hotel

Over in South Kensington, The Exhibitionist Hotel is another of my favorite quirky hotels in London. This hip place features rotating art exhibitions in an intimate, laid-back atmosphere.

The hotel channels style, chic, and cool from its funky lobby portraits to its individually-designed corridors. There’s something to catch the eye everywhere you look.

The Exhibitionist is conveniently located within walking distance of the South Kensington tube station and cultural heavyweights like the V&A, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum. You can book a room here.

6. The Hoxton

Shoreditch is London’s original capital of cool. The area has gentrified a lot since I moved to the UK, but it’s still known for hip bars, trendy restaurants, and good nightlife. Add to that great hotels like The Hoxton, and Shoreditch is a fun place to stay.

I’ve enjoyed a night at The Hoxton. It’s one of the area’s most famous hotels and I like its restaurant and cafe. Add to that great value for money and serious style, and this hotel is one of the best places to stay in London. You can book a room here.

7. Andaz London Liverpool Street

Liverpool Street also offers a good mix of quirky hotels in London. On one side of the street are modern skyscrapers, on the other lie Old Spitalfields Market and lots of charming lanes with historic houses and colorful doors.

My favorite hotel on Liverpool Street is Andaz London Liverpool Street. I’ve stayed here, eaten at a number of the restaurants and bars, and had afternoon tea at the Andaz.

But what makes it truly quirky is the secret old Masonic temple in the building. Discovered during a renovation, it adds a nice touch of mystery to the place. You can book a room here.

I know I’m always going on about how much I love Hampstead, but it’s hard not to when it’s such a perfect village in the city.

This area is one of the best places to stay in London if you want to have a local experience and a peaceful retreat from the chaos of the city center.

When I lived in Hampstead I always had my out-of-town visitors stay at La Gaffe. Not only is it the only hotel in Hampstead, but it’s also run by a friendly family that takes good care of its guests.

La Gaffe is a restaurant with rooms, and its historic atmosphere makes for unique accommodation. Add to that great value for money, and it’s one of the best unique places to stay in London. You can book a room here.

11. St Martins Lane Hotel

Not far from Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, St Martins Lane Hotel in Covent Garden is another of my favorite quirky hotels in London.

Philippe Starck created the hotel’s aesthetic to be a surrealist wonderland viewed through the looking glass of classic British eccentric taste.

I’ve stayed at St Martins Lane Hotel, and I love its amazing location and sleek contemporary style. Stepping inside truly feels like crossing the threshold into a more design-led world. You can book a room here.

13. Artist Residence

Just west of Westminster, Pimlico always flies under the radar. But it’s a great central location and has more of a neighborhood feel than a lot of the areas around it.

Best of all, Pimlico is home to the Artist Residence. This stylish hotel oozes character and design-led touches.

I’ve breakfasted here many times and toured the rooms once, and it’s a place I could move into given the chance. You can book a room here.

Right across the street from King’s Cross station, The Megaro Hotel brings unique style to the fore. Describing itself as a place of constant (r)evolution that’s high in colors and bold in flavors, it’s a unique place to stay in London.
