Bali Gears Up to Receive First Cruise Ship After A 2-Year Break

Bali is gearing up to welcome the island’s first cruise ship in nearly two years. The Australian cruise ship Laperouse will dock at the port of Benoa on September 19.

Seventy foreign visitors will arrive in Bali on the Laperouse after a short stopover in Port Kalabahi in East Nusa Tenggara.

Ardhy Wahyu Basuki, regional head of Indonesian port operators, told reporters that his staff is eager and ready to receive the Laperouse.

He explained, “This is the moment we have really been waiting for after almost 2 years of not receiving cruise ships because of the pandemic.”

Plans for the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub are even more exciting. Developing around the port of Benoa, the tourism region is focused on improving the area’s ability to accommodate larger cruise ships and ocean liners.

For those working on the project, the return of cruise ships to Below Port and the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub is an exciting and uplifting event.

According to Ardhy, at least 135 cruise ships are expected to dock at Benoa Port in 2023.

Several dozen more are expected by the end of 2022. He stated: “It is true that at this time we have obtained a number of planned ship visits in 2022 and 2023, we must prepare this properly so that it can have an impact on the tourism economy in Indonesia.”

I Nyoman Sudana, a local cruise operator, told reporters that it is crucial that these early cruise ship arrivals go smoothly. Stakeholders will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure that project management teams and the site are prepared for the highly anticipated return of cruise tourism and ambitious expansion plans.

Sudana stated, “This [arrival] needs to be carefully prepared because this momentum can be a turning point for the revival of international tourism in Indonesia and Bali in particular.”

Sudana expressed similar delight, adding that he, like many others, had been looking forward to this day for more than two years. Sudana can finally breathe a sigh of relief, even if he has to wait another week or so.

It has taken a very long time for the city to reopen and resume operations. While much of Bali’s tourism business has reopened in a sense, the cruise industry has had to wait. “This is something we have been looking forward to for approximately 2 years from this pandemic”.
