5 reasons to do a Sonoma bike tour | Intrepid Travel Blog

With more than 400 cellar doors to explore and plenty of award winning wines to quench your thirst along the way, Sonoma is the perfect destination for a cycling tour. When you cycle around Sonoma, you don’t just get to enjoy some top drops and soak up the beauty of the surrounding wine country. You’ll also cycle past vast redwood forests and cruise along rugged Pacific Ocean coastline that has views which seem to stretch on forever and scenery that takes your breath away. Here are 5 reasons why you should do a bike tour in Sonoma and see the sights on two wheels.

1. No bike? No problem!

Keen local cyclists often bring their own bicycle to Sonoma but if you’re visiting from out of town, there’s no need to have your own set of wheels. When you cycle around Sonoma on an Intrepid tour, an expertly fitted bike is provided as part of your tour. All you have to do is jump on and you’re set for an adventurous holiday that engages all five of your senses.

2. You don’t need to be an experienced cyclist

Cycling in Sonoma

Sonoma is well known for its competitive cycling races and challenging trails but you don’t need to be an experienced road warrior to cycle in Sonoma. There are cycling routes to suit every rider, from first-timers to pro cyclists and everyone in between. With an experienced leader who knows all the best routes and a pace that’s set for enjoyment rather than working up a sweat, a Sonoma cycling tour is a great trip for riders of every age and cycling ability.

3. You won’t go hungry (or thirsty)

With produce stands lining the country roads and more than 400 wineries to visit, there’s plenty of delicious food and drink to sustain on a Sonoma cycling trip. Sample some of the region’s award winning wines (responsibly, of course) and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants which dishes up the best of the region’s cuisine with vineyard views. If you would prefer to surround yourself with nature’s beauty in the great outdoors, pack a picnic and sit back and take in the views while you enjoy lunch under a shady tree along the way.

4. There’s no need to cycle far

Many of the wineries in the Sonoma Valley are so close together that you’ve only got to cycle a few hundred metres to get from one to the next. In fact, the town of Healdsburg and its surrounding area has cellar doors that are virtually next door to one another. Raise a glass and listen to vinyl records at Banshee Wines, sip pinot noir at Cartograph Wines, or sample Rhone-style wines at a family run vineyard. When you go wine tasting in Sonoma, there’s plenty of great scenery to enjoy as you ride from one cellar door to another as well.

5. An e-bike can help with the hills

If you feel like doing all the riding but with less effort, you have the option of hiring an electric bike (e-bike) when you join a cycle tour in Sonoma. You’ll still need to pedal but an e-bike can help you keep up with the group if you’re a little slower and makes the hills a lot easier too. Requesting an e-bike and a regular bike when you book your trip is a great way for couples or friends with varying fitness levels to enjoy a cycling trip in Sonoma together.
