Breaking news: Iceland has a new volcanic eruption!


We are not long back from Iceland (you can see the video just produced from our trip here and blog posts will follow shortly), only to hear that there is a new eruption at Geldingadalir in the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano, which started erupting on 19th March 2021, suddenly became one of Iceland’s hottest attractions – quite literally – and drew an estimated 350,000-400,000 tourists, giving the country a much-need boost after COVID.

Lava stopped spewing from the volcano in September of last year, making it the longest volcanic eruption in Iceland for some 50 years, and it was officially declared as no longer erupting on 16th October 2021. (However, when we visited last month, we could still see lava down one crack close to the crater – more on that in a separate blog post later).
