FINANCE COLLAB | Tips on Vehicle Insurance to Keep Your Holiday Season Safe at Home and on the Road

The holiday season is coming, and with our spirits high, everyone is anticipating to have a period of happiness after almost two years of the pandemic. But things can get awry at any moment, and you must make sure that everything that needs to be done is done to ensure a safe holiday season. The holiday season also means visiting friends and family, which is mostly done by driving.

The roads are probably one of the most unsafe places. Did you know that over 6 million passenger car accidents happen annually in the US, with the number rising recently? The chances of you being in a car accident are very high, especially during the holiday season when everyone prefers to stay “jolly” on the roads, completely disregarding speed limits.

So we’ve picked and presented the best tips on vehicle insurance to keep your holiday season safe at home and on the road, so you can safely be there with your friends and family and have a memorable time together. Let’s get started.

GET UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE

We can understand why many people do not get uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. With liability coverage being mandatory and expensive, along with collision coverage being equally expensive and important, you do not want to get another optional policy that costs a lot.

But if you want to be safe and secure on the road, while removing all the possibilities of a big financial loss due to a car accident, then you need to have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. This policy makes traveling on the freeway (and even in your city) much more secure. Here’s how.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is a policy that can be claimed when the other driver who is at fault lacks enough coverage limit to pay for the entire costs of the accident (that includes medical bills and repair costs)

According to the IRC, almost 32 million drivers in the US are uninsured. They do not have a liability coverage policy to pay for the accident they cause. That’s 1 in 8 Americans driving their cars without proper liability coverage. And that’s just uninsured. A lot more are underinsured, meaning that even if they have liability coverage, it is severely lacking. Still, think uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is unnecessary?

INCREASE YOUR LIABILITY COVERAGE LIMIT

You can be the Lewis Hamilton of the public roads and have decades of experience as a driver. Yet, the chances of you causing an accident are still present and it is still substantial. You are liable to pay for the medical treatments and damages of the other person with your liability coverage if you are at fault. The problem here is this; your policy must have an adequate coverage limit to pay for the entire cost of the accident.

There are three components of liability coverage: one pays for the medical bills of the individual driver, one pays for the entire cost of treatment per accident, and the last part covers the charges for property damage repairs. We all know how expensive medical treatments are in the US, so if your liability coverage is just around what your state’s minimum coverage requirements are, then you might be driving towards big financial and legal trouble.

If found lacking, your liability coverage would not be enough. This means the other driver can and will sue you for the money and will win. You’ll have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars from your pocket. This is not counting the other expenses for the legal problems.

The solution to this problem? Increase your minimum coverage limit, and make your liability coverage adequate to cover any road accident easily. Yes, you’ll have to pay a little bit extra and the insurance premium rates would go up as well, but isn’t that better than paying hundreds of thousands of dollars?

CHANGE YOUR AUTO INSURANCE POLICY IF NEEDED

Switching auto insurance policies is common, and sometimes actually needed. The reason why you should consider switching policies during the holiday season is that car insurance companies give great discounts and offers during this time of the year. You can get the same great coverage or even better coverage at lower prices!

All you need to do is look for the best policies, get the auto insurance quote, and select the one that has all the required coverage at the best price. Select an auto insurance company that gives a great coverage limit, with additional features like no-claims bonuses, accident forgiveness, great service all across the country, etc, and select the one that suits you the best.

Switch policies only if you feel that the benefits will exceed the hassle of switching policies. If you have gathered no-claim bonuses in your current policies (by not making any insurance claims), then it is better to stick with your current insurer.

GET PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION PLAN

The roads are not safe, and the cost of medical treatment is more than what 5 of your cars’ worth. So you must stay financially secure for medical treatments. A personal injury protection plan pays for the medical treatments you need as a result of a car accident, irrespective of whose fault the accident is.

12 states in the US, called “no-fault” states, require you to carry a personal injury protection plan. So get this policy even if you are not a resident of the “no-fault” states. You do not want to get in a financial crisis right after you’ve been in a car accident.

And these were the tips that you need to follow to make your auto insurance policies stronger and better. Auto insurance is necessary. Ensure that you get to spend the holidays safely with your friends and family.
